South Florida Cold Snap Is Overhyped -> Much Warmer

#1 Postby gatorcane » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:57 pm

Not sure how many are from S. Florida here (I'm in Boca Raton) but I'm really over the media spreading word that we will be seeing near freezing temperatures across Palm Beach County.

It's not going to happen!

I'm hearing people here in South Palm Beach County saying "get ready for the 30s!" We'll see temps here tonight in the mid to upper 40s with the clouds hanging around and maybe the lower 40s tomorrow night when the clouds *should* break

Anybody with me on this?

No, I never expected a freeze here. I have been expecting upper 30's and thats what looks to happen tomorrow morning. With the wind it should feel pretty cold out. I feel for south county though, always gets screwed with the cold weather.

They sure overhyped for Tampa. It doesn't feel that cold outside. They were predicting higher winds but its calm right now. Should be good football weather today. Go Bucs.

Yes! I was just saying this in another thread. Every time they say "Freeze warning" you can bet it won't. Only when they say it will get into the upper 20's can you bet on a freeze. It got down to 38-39 here last night. No where near freezing. With the wind chill it was quite cold but I get tired of hearing all the hype too.

It has been warmer and more humid in my area this winter than it used to be in past years. Also, my area has seen less clearer weather and more stalling fromts. Even some of the strongest fronts has stalled and not made it past southern Florida. Also, even the very rare coldest air behind fronts my area has had this year (like now) has not stayed as long as it used to in past years.

Has anyone in southern Florida (or Palm Beach County) noticed this?

Tonight is going to be the Coldest Night so far.

Clearing should come over the area along with light and variable winds. Radiational Cooling will make the thermometer drop like a rock.

They were forecasting 28 for Slidell this morning, we hit 23.

I think the freeze line will probably get down to Tampa across to Melbourne. If your near the coast, expect upper 30's. Inland may reach a 30.

Dont worry Floridians...in 7-10 days arctic air may overtake all areas east of the rockies. If this is so, then you guys may have your coldest air of the season (possibly in many years), yet to come!

True... however, you are not in my area. You are in Louisiana.

True, but will that air reach my area? Don't count on it happening.

Speaking of hype... that will wind up being overhyped as well. At best, that looks like a brief cold snap like this one.

Got down to around 36 10 miles inland or so, so I can guess the low here was around 39, just like forecasted. It was quite cold this morning. Hopefully in 2-3 weeks we get a good arctic front.

that did actually happen in 2003. The east coast of Florida saw some "Ocean effect" flurries. 30s in Florida is actually quite common during the winter in the northern 2/3rds of the state, and usuallu occur every winter or every other winter for south Florida. In Tallahassee, Fl (in panhandle) the low has reached -2 degrees in 1899 (all-time state low). In Central Florida, Orlando has reached 19 and in south Florida, even Miami has hit the mid 20s before (and in 1977 there was even light snow in Miami). The state record snowfall is 4" set in Milton, Fl during the 1950s.

That was a once in a lifetime event! I remeber hearing my parents telling me about that. And one time a few years back they said it was snowing, I went outside and it was like a few microscopic flakes for about 5 minutes. So you are right it does not snow in Florida. And it rarley freezes here in Orlando(central FL). I think it did once or twice last year, and it is unusual for it to freeze more than 8 times in a season here. North Florida gets alot colder than central and south florida.
