When will Minnesota lose its snowpack?

#1 Postby BReb » Thu Jan 26, 2006 9:59 pm

I just saw it's 43 degrees in Minneapolis. In January. At night. It's supposed to rain later tonight. Sigh.

This is a nasty heatwave in the upper midwest- just how much snowpack is going to be left when it's over? It's great to talk about the frigid air in Alaska, but it's just going to moderate if there's no snowpack in the midwest.

Looking at accuweather long range forecasts...snow is expected next week in Minneapolis and highs will fall below 20 again by early February. I think that it will be cold enough for snow cover to set up across the plains before we see the main push of arctic air southward.

I live right in Minneapolis, near it anyway, and we have a few inches of snow still on the ground. Probably close to 3 inches, but all the roads and sidewalks are bare. we might get some snow on saturday night and sunday depending on the track/intensity of this latest storm, but i dont see any major snowstorms for us for at least the next 10 days (unless this weekends storm somehow pulls it together). Tomorrow and saturday are both expected to be in the mid 40s, though, maybe 50 tomorrow.

I live in NW Minnesota, and while this isn't an official reading or anything, I would say I have between 8-12 inches in my backyard; as long as we don't get a sustended period of 40° or more weather, we should have snow for awhile yet!
