Yes Ivan was bad, and yes it was the 4th costliest in US History, but I really do not think it was the worst to hit the state during the 2004 season (as the speaker refers it to be). In fact, Charley is ranked the 3rd costliest storm in US history (one above Ivan) and also hit the state that year. Charley also came ashore as a 150mph Cat. 4 (close to being a Cat. 5), and Ivan only came ashore as a 3 (but the highest recorded winds were only Cat. 1 force). In terms of surge it was probably the worst, but worst overall? I think not. But either way, scary video for sure.

That IS amazing... To think what we know now compared to what we knew when Ivan came ashore. That it could get worse than Ivan was virtually unthinkable.

The numbers on homes destroyed, blue tarps issued, businesses destroyed, and unemployment rates, etc., all seemed so extreme when Ivan was given the title of the 4th worst natural disaster in US history. Then only one year later, another storm comes along that makes those numbers pale in comparison. Lordy, what will '06 bring???

Of course, for any individual who was impacted by Ivan, just as me and my family with Katrina, and for others who suffered catastrophic damage in other storms, we don't care about the numbers because for us it is personal and specific to our daily existence. And it truly is one day - one moment - at a time.

Man-o-man, those 911 calls really have me recalling my morning with Katrina. Until I was in the same situation in completely unexpected waist-deep water and watching the house fill up with sea water, I had no true feeling for what those folks were going through. That is no longer the case...

When Ivan hit I thought nothing could get this bad. Well maybe Camille. I remember those first few days after Ivan. I remember watching t.v. and seeing the damage to the area through the news as they were able to get into areas. I remember driving down the beach the week after Ivan hit and thinking that a bomb had gone off at some of the condos in Orange Beach. It was something that you saw in a third world nation or in the movies. Ivan was bad.

But 2005 came and the unthinkable happen. Never in my lifetime did I think I would witness a storm that would take out three states along the coastline. I also found out what Charley did to Punta Gorda. When you go by fema trailer cities that have been there for over a year it makes you realize that no matter how long ago a storm has hit it last for a long time.

I have one word...Scary. Scary to think that I stayed here in Fairhope at my husband's work place during Ivan.

It like the Gulf Coast. It will be a long time before things are back to normal. That is if anything will ever be the same.

Okay I will get off my soap box. I don't think it matter how bad we think the storms are. Someone was effected and has suffer and that is what we need to remember. There are people out there that need help.

Ivan didn't just hit Florida, It affected rural Alabama too. I could tell you that first hand, being its the worst hurricane I've ever been through.

I wonder what the damage costs would have been if the storms were switched? In other words Charley in the panhandle and Ivan on the southwest coast. Charley was small but hit a wealthy coast line ( Sanibel, Captiva, etc) Ivan was large but hit a well developed but probably"less expensive" coastline and then moved into a very rural sparsely populated area. Either way a big mess. The video definitely brought back memories.
I dont think anyone who has ever been through a big storm will ever forget that feeling when they first see the damage left behind.

That video serves as a reminder that if you call 911 for help in the middle of the storm NO ONE is coming to help you. If you are told to leave before the storm do so! Emergency workers will either leave before the storm or be hunkered down for their own safety.

Thanks for keeping this bumped. I think this should be a reminder that a hurricane is NOTHING to play with and that if they cant get to you like they say then you have NO CHOICE but to wait it out. People need to be reminded of this over and over.
