What Was The Worst About Katrina?

After all that has happened from Katrina and in terrible sadness, pain, and confusion, and stress from the season, I say EVERYTHING!

The poll questions are storm related and aftermath related. Personally, (other than the storm itself) I would have to say the lack of leadership from the local level all the way up to the state. If it wasn't for that, then LA would not have lost as many lives. Cities, towns can be rebuilt, not people IMO......

That is a tough one, because all of it was intertwined and affected each thing. I do have to say that the lives lost and the mis/non communication(imo) at all levels both pre and after was the worst thing. My vote is everything though.

From a personal perspective, it was (AND IS) the surge. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd end up with storm surge in my home. And five months later, that very issue continues to be my daily existence. My wife and I lost everything below four feet, including both our cars and my entire workshop which took six feet. Both of our daughters lost their entire home and belongings, and one lost her car as well. My son lost his truck and has relocated indefinitely to TN. All five of us lost our jobs, my wife and I having been in ours for 8 and 11 years respectively.

Because of Katrina's surge, my entire family has now been displaced, and nothing - I MEAN NOTHING - is as it was on August 28...

If not for Katrina's surge, NONE of this would be the ongoing topic. But as it is, everything around here centers on Katrina, day in and day out. TV news, newspapers, and radio talk shows - all of them are and have been solely about Katrina since August 29, and there's no let up in sight.

Yep, the surge is the root cause of this entire mess... Here on the MS coast, we live it and re-live it 24/7/365.

Count me in for everything. 1.5 million people from SE LA did evacuate. There are 3 reasons why people did not leave. IMO, some had no way out, some did not want to leave their valuables to the human trash that stayed behind and the rest knew what they could get out of something like this.

I feel the loss of a single life creates an irreplaceable vacuum in some family; when you multiply that by nearly 1500 it's unbelievably tragic. Yes the surge was horrendous, and the human tragedy and damage in the aftermath was beyond description. All that said, I figured that while all were "bad" (although I do not think that "New Orleans getting all the attention" should even remotely be considered as one of the "worst" things about this monster given all the other real tragedies) that the single worst--would be the human toll. Such a sad thing!

Yes definatly all of the above, gave us a good idea of what to expect for the future as well, because there are plenty of other major cities that are just sitting ducks waiting for one of these beasts like Katrina to strike them down. Thats the worst of it you see, its highly likely we will see another Katrina like storm hit a major US city, they have happened in the past, no doubt they will happen again.

The number of lives lost. I couldn't believe what it caused. I thought it was just going to be a "routine" hurricane. Turns out the loss of life puts the other factors to shame, considering if something were to happen and we'd live trough it, I would be thankful to stay alive.

Thanks, T... And the same to you and yours.

It continues to be a long road, but I gotta believe there's light at the end of the tunnel. Certainly, none of us ever thought we'd be so extremely entrenched in this ongoing situation...

My brother in Uptown N.O. (near the corner of Valence and Freret) still doesn't have power - can't seem to get hooked up with Intergy for one reason or another. And he was dry throughout!! I can't imagine what it must be like for those in the "other" areas of the city.

Like your avtar!!

Everything. My life was forever changed, and I might see my kids 3 times a year for the next 1-2 years. :(

But I had to take on this:

>>The poll questions are storm related and aftermath related. Personally, (other than the storm itself) I would have to say the lack of leadership from the local level all the way up to the state.

BZZZZT. Incomplete answer. As our GOP Congress has now put out the 600 pages of testimony, that would primarily be the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT; not just local and state. All 3 were very weak in their respective responses. But the city/region and state are powerless without the Feds in this type of emergency. The Feds were far more inept than the local or state government. Of course if you're a trolling Republican, I'd expect a full excusal of the White House (even if that would be incorrect).

Steve - It'll be interesting to see what happens if Michael Brown tells all to
the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Based upon news reports last week, he's got a lot more to say.

Yeah. I don't really blame anyone myself (more like I blame everybody), but an objective look at the disaster would really mean fingers pointed at everyone (including Mr. Brown). It was just too immense of a situation to handle in real-time for anyone at any level. Hopefully the 'lessons learned' file got big and fat. So whether the next Katrina-like devastation is the result of an earthquake in L.A. or a storm in Houston, Miami, or even the Eastern Seaboard, we'll all be better prepared (just as I think we were for Rita and to a degree Wilma which is kind of another case since it hit a lot stronger than many people had expected).

Not a republican, sorry....I call it like I see it.

An inept lack of leadership primarily at the Mayor / State Senator level. Their lack of leadership abilities cost lives. I never said anything about the Feds. Care to deny that? SteveO...

You didn't look carefully enough then. Since the Republican Congress basically blasted the White House (particularly DHS & FEMA) as well as state and local, you can't give them a break. I didn't deny you didn't say anything about the Feds. I was simply miffed that you gave them a pass when they, themselves, shouldered the bulk of the blame.

Care to take that one on? It's front page news today all over the major websites.

Take the political portions of this private guys. Please discuss the news of it and don't get into the political back and forth. I know it is a political subject, but it can be discussed without getting "political".
