'Dallas' movie may not be shot in Dallas

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Thu Feb 23, 2006 10:24 pm

By GARY COGILL / WFAA ABC 8

The Dallas TV series premiered in 1978, ran for 13 seasons, reaching a world-wide audience. Hollywood is now prepping a Dallas feature film with John Travolta scheduled to play J.R. Ewing, but 20th Century Fox is considering not shooting Dallas in Dallas.

"No, we are getting our butts kicked when it comes to incentives. We are lucky that we are able to still be in the game at all. The reason we are is because we have infrastructure, we have all of our history of being a film center, and that is starting to erode," said Janis Burklund.

A major film contributes millions of dollars into the local economy.

Places in the Heart, Tender Mercies, Born on the 4th of July, four Oliver Stone films, were all shot here.

But since 2003, Texas has lost more than $800 million movie dollars, because other states offer better incentives.

"Mostly they went to Louisiana, New Mexico, Canada, with very little exception those were the places they went to," says Burklund.

Why are they going there?

"Incentives, they get money back, they get a check back at the end."

Australian director, Robert Luketic, who directed Monster-In-Law is Fox's choice to direct the Dallas feature; it's also his choice to shoot in North Texas.

"The plan is that we'll come to Dallas maybe in the fall, to winter, shooting all over downtown," he says.

But, Luketic's plans are currently threatened. The bottom line... is the bottom line. Movie making is a business and until Texas gets serious about the business of movies, the studios won't be serious about Texas.

"There is a lot at stake here, not only for us but for the studio. If Dallas isn't shot in Dallas, that's not necessarily good PR for them either. I think there is a need on their desire to want to keep it real, however, the bottom line is going to dictate," said Burklund.

What - no exterior Southfork shots?

Oh my.....Barbara Bel Geddes (Miss Ellie) is turning over in her grave!

To be honest, I'm not putting much stock into this new Dallas movie. Sometimes, it's just best to leave the original alone. Because it was done to perfection (at the time). Sure you can always improve on things, but why? I don't want to see JR making oil deals at his lap top. I want to see him using his land mine phone, wheeling and dealing, combover and all!

There, I'm done. I was a huge, die hard Dallas fan. It's only #2 favorite TV show of all time!

Another move for 'Dallas' movie

By ED BARK / The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS, Texas - Further plans to entice the producers of a planned Dallas feature film to make it in its eponymous city will be announced today by Mayor Laura Miller.

She'll be joined at a City Hall news conference by Dallas Film Commission director Janis Burklund and Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau president and CEO Phillip Jones in unveiling the initiative.

"This is just another step, a way to get more of a public grass-roots effort going," Ms. Burklund said Tuesday. "We're going to be rolling things out piece by piece. This is not an exact science here."

Producers of the 20th Century Fox-Regency Enterprises film have been entertaining offers from other states that already have more attractive built-in financial incentives, including Louisiana and Florida. Shooting tentatively is scheduled to begin in late summer or early fall, with an "all-star cast" that reportedly includes John Travolta as J.R. Ewing.

Ms. Burklund said it's her understanding that the Dallas movie has four budget scenarios, ranging from filming it entirely in Dallas or using the city only for scene-setting exterior shots.

Filmmakers likely will make a final decision sometime this spring, she said.

City ramps up effort to snare 'Dallas' movie

By DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS, Texas - There’s at least one case of attempted murder everyone from Mayor Laura Miller on down wants to witness inside Dallas’ city limits.

City Hall this afternoon unveiled its “Shoot JR in Dallas!” campaign, designed to attract the producers of feature-length film Dallas to its namesake city. Several suitor states and nations including Louisiana, Florida and - gasp! - Canada, are vying to become a proxy Big D.

“The thought of Dallas being made in Toronto is not a good idea,” Ms. Miller said.

City government estimates the flick, in which John Travolta and Catherine Zeta-Jones are rumored to star, would result in $30 million being spent in Dallas, to say nothing of new jobs and free publicity.

Donning black T-shirts and hats promoting the Dallas-in-Dallas cause, City Council members and Film Commission Director Janis Burklund urged citizens to participate in the campaign by writing letters and logging onto filmdfw.com to purchase related merchandise.

Dallas is limited in what it may offer filmmakers. The Texas Legislature last year passed a bill intent on making Texas a movie-making destination by offering producers up to $750,000 to rebate production costs. But the initiative remains unfunded.

Ms. Burklund says the city still is seeking to offer Dallas executives a bevy of extras, including free office and production space.

Ms. Miller has often talked of transcending the 1980s-era Dallas television show’s big-hair, oil baron, urban cowboy image, which still saddles the city.

In her 2004 state of the city address, for example, she called on the Trinity River Corridor project to become Dallas’ “crown jewel.” The development “puts Dallas back on the map nationally and internationally and allows us to be known for more than Southfork and the Cowboys,” Ms. Miller said, alluding to the fictional homestead of Dallas character JR Ewing.

But the Dallas movie, she said, is different.

“We can change some of the old Dallas TV show stereotypes that have lasted all these years. We could create some new stereotypes for the city,” Ms. Miller said, smiling. “I haven’t read the script, but anything that can engender the kind of international chatter about our city like the TV show did is certainly something good for Dallas.”

Said Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau President and Chief Executive Officer Phillip Jones: “It’ll give us a new look and a new twist on how people perceive Dallas. It’s really important for our pride to try to get that film and make sure it’s here on location as much as possible.”

Ms. Burklund said it's her understanding that the Dallas movie has four budget scenarios, ranging from filming it entirely in Dallas or using the city only for scene-setting exterior shots. Filmmakers likely will make a final decision sometime this spring, she said.

And as for City Hall’s call to shoot someone amid its campaign to hire more cops and reduce crime?

“Shoot means film - film shoot,” was the mayor’s clarification as if any was needed. “If [Police Chief David] Kunkle were here, he’d mention that.”

Dallas Morning News staff writer Ed Bark contributed to this report.

'Shoot J.R. in Dallas,' city says

By DON WALL / WFAA ABC 8

Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July is just one example of a popular movie that was filmed in Dallas. But is Hollywood saying "cut" to North Texas?

Not if local officials have their way.

A renaissance in North Texas filmmaking could begin with the big-screen version of the Dallas TV series, but there are major problems to overcome first.

Dallas—the TV show—was partially filmed in its namesake city. Scores of prominent motion pictures like The Alamo and Tender Mercies were produced in Texas and many of them used North Texas locations.

"There's a lot of people around town who know how to make movies," said director Mark Whiting, who moved from Los Angeles to Dallas to work with Reel FX Creative Studios.

"I'm surprised by the kind of talent that is seen on the commercial shoots, and the talent that's around town," Whiting said. "It's comparable to Hollywood."

But a lot of that local talent is moving to other states and even to Canada, because of the business side of show biz.

Over the past three years, Dallas has lost at least 24 major film projects with budgets topping $500 million.

Now, the city wants to change that.

"The harsh reality is that Canada and Lousiana and other places offer cash incentives to get people to make movies there, and we don't," said Dallas Mayor Laura Miller.

The Texas legislature passed a filmmaking incentive bill, but failed to fund it. That's hurting the state's film industry, because the new Dallas film could wind up being shot in Toronto.

On Wednesday, the city launched a campaign to "Shoot J.R. in Dallas," a theme that plays on the most famous plot point of the TV series.

"We really need Dallas here," said Janis Burklund of the Dallas Film Commission. "I mean, it's really going to be hard to convince other films and television projects to come here if Dallas doesn't come here."

For Texas movies, the line in the sand is not at the Alamo. It's in Dallas.

J.LO DOES DALLAS?: That big-screen version of Dallas is inching closer to reality. Variety reports that the cast is starting to fill out — particularly in the backside, one might say, with Jennifer Lopez being offered the role of Sue Ellen Ewing (played by Linda Gray on the long-running CBS serial). Luke Wilson is in talks to play Bobby, and Shirley MacLaine is being eyed for Miss Ellie, while the most plum part, J.R. himself, is still earmarked for John Travolta (production on Dallas would begin in October, after he's done filming Hairspray). You can practically hear Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson catfighting over the role of Lucy.

quite frankly, i cant imagine any of the cast they've talked about thus far. how about we do our own poll of who folks think should play the various roles:

JR: George Clooney
Miss Ellie: Gena Rowlands
Sue Ellen: Sharon Stone
Bobby: Brendan Fraser
Pam: Ashley Judd
Lucy: Jessica Alba

I like your list alicia, except for Gena Rowlands. Not sure who'd have for Miss Ellie but someone more fair and light skinned maybe. Ah heck, I want Barbara Bel Geddes is who I want.

I don't even want this movie made, period!

I'm okay with Travolta as JR.

What would really be neat is if they chose relatively unknown actors/actresses for the roles. I'm sure they wouldn't even dream about casting roles to unknowns. Pun intended.....the Dallas dream? LOL

maybe a couple of the lesser roles (like Lucy for instance) should go to an unknown. If the movie's a success, what a great way to break out in the business.

I had picked Judy Dench first. But I sincerely doubt she would do a movie like Dallas. Lauren Bacall would be good but I dont think she's in any shape after what I saw at the Oscars.

So Joanne Woodward would be good.

The image a well known actor or actress instantly brings to mind, conflicts with these very strong, and sentimental images I have of the Ewings. That's my problem. Dallas is only my second favorite TV show of all time, formed waaaaaay back in 1979! I missed only 6 first run Dallas episodes too. Yes all those years, I was home on Friday nights, waiting patiently for the wheeling and dealing to begin. Later on, I bought a VCR, primarily for this reason - to record Dallas and be out with my friends, at happy hour which went on until late in the evening. Ask any Dallas fan and they'll already have actors in mind for the primo roles. Or say no one can touch Barbara Bel Geddes, Jim Davis, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Charlene Tilton, Victoria Principal, Linda Gray, Ken Kercheval, Steve Canaly, and Susan Howard! Two more if they show Gary/Val - Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark.

Oh I'll probably see it and then pop in one of my favorite episodes from Season 1. I'll just miss the original Ewings I suspect.......;-)

JR: Tommy Lee Jones
Miss Ellie: Patty Duke
Sue Ellen: Kirstie Alley or Mimi Rogers
Bobby: Dermot Mulroney
Pam: Ashley Judd (can't help but totally agree on this one!)
Lucy: Alicia Silverstone

Jennifer Lopez is out of the picture now. She got upset when someone accidentally stung her with a BB from an air pistol on the set.

Charges are pending, but the question remains...

Ya ready??

Who shot J. Lo?

Kidding! No shooting, no quitting the movie, nothing like that. I just couldn't resist the joke. :)

LOL @ Duckie!

Who shot J Lo? I like it, I like it! And her rear would be a nice target, can't miss that! Ohhh, that was catty-catty! And we do need an actor who can play the sleezy role of JR. He has to have that swagger too. Yep, Tommy Lee would fill that role just fine.

Keep talking........you're making me miss the Ewings now! I'm not even sure if Dallas is currently airing on Soapnet or not! We have the lowest satellite tier, which doesn't bring you Soapnet. For my birthday last year, my daughters were seriously thinking of giving me a bar of soap, tied in a piece of netting. Here's your Soapnet mom!

Wonder if they'll change the theme song - gasp? They'd better KNOT - get it? ;-)
