GM has failed again

I have been a Camaro fan all my life. I have owned several from the 69 to the 89 to the 2000. I was upset when they discontinued the Camaro. I have been waiting for GM to unveil the 2007 since I have heard about them possibly coming out with a "newer concept" Well, it has been unveiled and I do not like it. I was told it would look like the 69 Camaro Z-28. I do not see it. I have been putting off buying the new Mustang waiting to see what this one will look like since I AM a Chevy Camaro fan. Guess I am off to buy the new Mustang.

Lindaloo, a lot of the concept cars that try and go retro never look the same, but the handling I think is much better. I would go with the camaro. A true fan would always go with what they love. Also, I think the new mustangs look ugly just like the thunderbirds did when they came out.

Have you ever owned a Camaro? My fan statement means that I am not a fan of what they have chosen to do with the Camaro. I think the new Mustang looks better than the other styles. Ford mastered the "old look" while GM has failed once again. Will the new Camaro be a big seller? I highly doubt it. I can assure you that this Camaro will not pull GM out of bankruptcy. GM needs to stick with one designer and stop being a copy cat. Looks like they copied Chrysler.

Wait until it comes out and then decide after driving both. The front end looks good but the rest is blah.

Yeah, Linda, I don't think that they captured the spirit of the original Camaro.

Both the Mustang and the Challenger have succeeded though.

Mopar has been doing pretty well in the style and appearance department in recent years.

When I was growing up, one of my girlfriends had a pretty white Camaro -it may have been 1976 or 1977. I felt "so cool" riding around with her!

I've have a 80 Camaro (last year before they went with the fatal box design).

The new specs on what was unveiled at the Detroit auto show blows the Mustangs away.

Simply beautiful and truly a next-gen muscle car!

A little off topic, but I read somewhere that Dodge would put the Challenger into production for 2007 if 25,000 people put down $5000 each towards buying one. Don't know how true that is, and I don't have a source.

The back does look a little like a '69, but I'm still having problems with the front. Just seems kind of "bulky" for lack of a better word.

Oh dang. Thanks for that pic Jack. It does kinda/sorta resemble the 69 in the back of the car. They could have done better with the front end. Wish I could find a virtual link.

I also heard they are not offering the V-6 in this car, just V-8.

Just to prove that German automakers aren't the only ones who plan products based on what their rivals have done, GM comes out with the Camaro--a retro-styled, two-door coupe with a honking big V-8 that harks back to the glory days of Motown. If that sounds familiar, that's exactly what Ford did with the Mustang. Hot on the heels of the Pony car's success, DaimlerChrysler has dusted off the Challenger and Chevy has produced a new Camaro, a nameplate that was more recently interred. The muscular Camaro concept is pure '69 updated, with the kind of subtle detailing that makes it look up-to-the-minute. The interior is very glitzy, and pays homage to the original, even down to the GM seat belt insignia and the twin instrument pods.

The car is 186.2 inches long and rides on a 110.5-inch wheelbase. The wheels are 21s at the front and 22s at the rear, shod with monster 275/30 front and 305/30 rear tires, which should be able to corral the 400 horses from the LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine powering through a six-speed manual transmission. The show car has a cobbled together chassis with an all-independent suspension, but if it makes it into production, it will use the so-called Zeta Lite architecture that will be shared with Holden in Australia. The good news for GM is that the architecture--while hardly cutting edge--is far more sophisticated than the live-axle Mustang. Insiders say that a $20,000 base model production car could use an inexpensive V-8 (the LS2 would come in a costlier model), so a V-6 version would be offered only to make the car easier to insure. The real car would have smaller wheels, but the overall diameter of the tires wouldn't be much changed. GM vice-chairman and product czar Bob Lutz apparently loves it and joked on the show stand "all I have to do is persuade this man"--referring to GM CEO Rick Wagoner--"to pay for it."
