14 Named Tropical Systems in 5 years, north GOM coast.

#1 Postby MGC » Sat Mar 04, 2006 10:43 pm

It has been a challenging period, the past five hurricane seasons for people living along the north GOM coastline. 14 named tropical cyclones have impacted the stretch of coast from Louisiana to include the Florida Panhandle. Here is the breakdown by season:

2001: Allison, Barry
2002: Bertha, Hanna, Isidore, Lilli
2003: Bill
2004: Ivan, Matthew
2005: Arlene, Cindy, Dennis, Katrina, Rita

With Ivan, Katrina and Rita occurring the last two seasons. I expect another active season for the GOM. However, I doubt this upcoming season can match 2005's activity. Hopefully, this season will be a quite one along the coast as much rebuilding is ongoing......MGC

The scary thing is that since 2004, the major hurricanes Ivan, Dennis, Katrina, and Rita have affected from Matagorda, TX to St. Marks, FL.

Really amazing, almost 3 storms per year. That's more than the average named storms that form in the CPAC each season!

That season was a real pain in the butt for the MS Coast. Nothing too serious, but a pain none-the-less.

Well.... Of the 13 in operation pre-Katrina, three are up in a temporary mode - Isle of Capri, The I.P., and The Palace.

As for the other 10, here's the breakdown:

Casino Magic Biloxi - Destroyed
Grand Casino Biloxi - Destroyed
Boomtown Biloxi - Heavily Damaged
Hard Rock Biloxi - Destroyed
Beau Rivage Biloxi - Heavily Damaged
Treasure Bay Biloxi - Destroyed
President Casino Biloxi - Destroyed
Copa Casino Gulfport - Destroyed
Grand Casino Gulfport - Destroyed
Casino Magic Bay St. Louis - Damaged

Of those ten:
--Grand Gulfport has been sold by Harrah's to the company that owns the Copa. Eventually, the Copa will open at the site of the now-defunct Grand Gulfport (my "previous" employer :( :( )
--Boomtown has its barge on the shipyard getting repaired and closed until further notice.
--Grand Biloxi will reopen with a new name (actually two) under the Harrah's Brand. Working on a temporary casino in its Bayview Hotel.
--Hard Rock is tied up with its insurance company and financial backer.
--Casino Magic Biloxi is very quiet on its plans. Actually, almost silent.
--Beau Rivage is working to reopen in late summer 2006.
--Treasure Bay will open a new casino in its hotel - probably 2007
--President Casino was planning to close and relocate pre-Katrina. Now, the Broadwater (its former site) is planning a $1 Billion casino/resort to open in 2008 - 2010.
--Copa is moving to the old GCG site, but won't be in operation until 2007 or 2008.
--Casino Magic Bay St. Louis has not announced a reopening date, but their damage was the least of all the casinos. Their RV park and Golf Course are back in operation.

quick correction

Ophelia was not a 1.6 billion dollar storm. NHC corrected that to 70 million

I think so A2K. That was in the early 90's but that boat was replaced in the mid to late 90's by the current barge that was ripped from its mooring and ended up in the old Holiday Inn by the Colisium. Now the President Casino barge is just a small pile of rubble and most of it has been removed. I drove by Treasure Bay Casino, its barge resembled a pirate ship and it is being dismantled. Of all the wrecked casino barges, Treasuse Bay's wreck looked the coolest. The pirate ship was beached a short distance and really did look like a ship wreck.....MGC

Yeah, I've seen pictures of that one.. simply amazing. Sorry to hear about the old President.. (The steamship), it was a landmark when it was here in N.O. and I recall many a fond memory taking rides for dances on that thing.

>>That season was a real pain in the butt for the MS Coast. Nothing too serious, but a pain none-the-less.

It was exciting though. There were the other two tropical storms, one of which vanished and was absorbed by the F storm (Fay?). We were getting a feeder band with some light tropical rains and all of the sudden we got over an inch in a few minutes. I ran the Miami RAMSYS long range, and the energy from the storm that got absorbed by Fay was passing through to our south and blasted us like a tropical wave.

Yes - it WAS exciting, no douibt. The pic below shows the fresh water "RAIN" results of one of those storms in that year (can't remember which one). Pre-K, I thought that was about as bad as it could get. Boy, was I ever wrong.

With Katrina's salt water surge, the water stopped rising at about two inches below those windows shown in the "Back Yard" pic. No rain with Katrina - at least none to speak of...
