History of name Bill

#1 Postby Andrew92 » Fri Jul 04, 2003 5:39 pm

Before I begin on the history of this name, a reminder for those that might not know (I'm sure a lot do know though, but there might be some that don't), this name was used to replace the name Bob, retired in 1991. OK, onward and upward.

1997: Developed from an upper-level low quickly into a tropical storm on July 11 near Bermuda, but from there rapidly headed northeastward out to sea. It briefly on the 12th hit hurricane intensity at 75 mph, but then became extratropical as it raced past the Maritime Provinces. Bermuda was only slightly threatened, nothing major with this storm.

2003: Developed into a tropical storm in the central Gulf of Mexico on June 29 and headed toward Louisiana. It intensified a little, gathering winds at 60 mph just before making landfall near Grand Isle at about midday on the 30th. The remnants later caused some problems throughout the southern states, especially Atlanta, over the next two to three days before heading offshore. Overall, damage was mostly due to flooding and there were numerous downed trees and power lines. The storm was blamed for one death in Atlanta.
