I posted the information because my Environmental Science professor in FIU said that it would help us understand better everything that we had discusses about global warming over the past lectures, and I though it would be important for everyone else to know. I don't think it will be political, go to their website and you will see there is no pollitics involved.

Nevertheless, I find topics like this very informative because in Guate you see stuff like this taking place. The natives have this sense of something coming real soon, but no one listens....

SO2 emissions which create sulphuric acid aerosols (reflect sunlight) are the main culprit. There are also likely effects on the properties of clouds but this is difficult to quantify. However, emissions of this (along with particulate matter) for the most part are on the decline or leveling out in modern countries. The reason is their obvious effect on the environment acid rain, poor air quality, ect. In essence the GHG signal is being masked, and the mask is not (and will not be) growing as fast as the GHG signal.

Looking at the page on it, it looks like it is something that was shown here almost 3 years ago but redubbed with an American voice over. If it is then it is a good programme.

Yes it is the same programme as the producer is the same. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/dimming_qa.shtml

I have to go to work today so if I don't see it, can someone "please" explain it to me, what it is about?

Knowing PBS predilection for slant, I'm convinced it is... and will leave it at that... someone else already pointed out that this is a political hot potato, and adherents for both sides can get quite indignant when challenged. Suffice it to say, I'll pass on it; but good watching to those who opt otherwise.

No one should deny the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the effects its had on the global enviroment.

The question is how much, and every little bit does have some influence on the tropics...

Dr. William Gray might take issue with you on that... from a recent interview with Dr. Gray:

Glassman: And from a seasonal, monthly point of view, you had been predicting a growing number of hurricanes. Now, my question is in the wake of Katrina and some of the statements that we’ve heard immediately afterwards by advocates of the global warming theory – is global warming behind this increase in hurricanes?

Gray: I am very confident that it’s not. I mean we have had global warming. That’s not a question. The globe has warmed the last 30 years, and the last 10 years in particular. And we’ve had, at least the last 10 years, we’ve had a pick up in the Atlantic basin major storms. But in the earlier period, if we go back from 1970 through the middle ‘90s, that 25 year period – even though the globe was warming slightly, the number of major storms was down, quite a bit down.

In case you (or anyone else for that matter) would like to see the full text of the interview and Dr. Gray's comments, the link is below:

http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=4403

Beyond that, I'll say no more... I don't advocate any position one way or the other of this site/periodical, just that it was an interview with Dr. Gray and global warming was the key topic--especially the alleged link to possibly exacerbating the hurricane scenario. ...like I said earlier--too political as hot buttons go.

If you wish to avoid political topics on this Board then threads on Global Warming (both sides), Illegal Immigration, Religion, etc. should not be allowed as all of these topics are highly charged political issues and it's impossible not for them to become political and thus meet with the disapproval of the mods/admin.
