Bartering

#1 Postby Janice » Wed May 17, 2006 8:17 am

My husband's parents would be 100 years old today if they were alive. They had him when they were in their 40's. Johns mother was a music teacher and taught piano lessons in their home for many years.

There would be times when instead of being paid with money, she would accept chickens, pies and eggs, etc. for payment of the piano lessons.

Do you remember your folks or grandparents saying they had no money sometimes, so they bartered for items too?

we barter for items now. we have several friends in the gemology business. we all have collectible ivory, jewelry, etc, that we trade for new-to-us pieces.

even in our neighborhood we barter. we do yard work and some light home maintenance for an older couple across the street and a harried mom next door, and they do things like watch our house when we're gone and babysit our dog, provide baked goods (since i love to cook but HATE to bake...) and other things. we take care of one guy's fish pond and he's going to help us paint inside the house and take down wallpaper. beats going to a contractor!
