Greetings Storm2K friends,
I'm a Floridian who lives and works in West Africa much of the year. As our rainy season is just getting underway, I attempted today for the first time in months to look at the satellite images for West Africa. (Meteosat7)
Using this link which I'd bookmarked:
http://www.ghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/GOES/metsat7vis.html
I was dismayed to see that the last image available is from Jan 6, 2006.
Did the satellite die? Does anyone know what's up with Meteosat 7 and if there's any other option for viewing Sat. images from West Africa?
Thanks.

Subject: GI: MET-5 and MET-8 Data "Outage" Update - Issued on 05/28/06 at
Topic: MET- 5, and MSG/MET-8 Satellite Data Outage
Message Issued: 05/28/2006, 0727 UTC
Satellites Impacted: MET5 and MSG/MET-8
Products Impacted: MET- 5 and MSG/MET-8 images, products, etc...
Date/Time of Initial Impact: 05/27/2006, 1800 UTC
-------------------------------
Details:
We experienced a MET 5 and MSG/MET-8 data "outage".
Cause:
The Meteosat primary server experienced a problem where it stopped
"looking" at a port then afterwards the system hung.
Resolution:
System admin. completed an IP switch to point to the backup Meteosat
server. (hot backup) A full set of data was available for manual
retrieval from the backup server so MET-5 and MET-8 data between J-147
at 1800z and J-148 at 0200z can be obtained.
Thank you for you patience.

You can use this website which we always use to monitor hurricanes. It has great weather images of West Africa and it's imperative when monitoring tropical waves coming out the African coast during the hurricane season.
