About 80 pictures from Biloxi to Long Beach, Mississippi
I went down this morning (June 28, 2006) and drove from the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge over into Long Beach taking pictures. Past Long Beach, there really aren't many landmarks to let you know where you are, so I didn't go past the Long Beach Yacht Club (a trailer now). May go down to Pass Christian and Bay/Waveland later.
Here's a LOT of photos (total of about 8 Megabytes):

I think he rode it out at the American Legion post 119. which is next door to the VA hospital.

Actually, he rode it out in the Armed Forces Retirement Home near the boarder of Biloxi and Gulfport on Highway 90.

Those pictures really touch me. Unbelieveable the amount of damage that one storm did.
My husband was in Waveland/Bay St. Louis not too long ago with a friend before going down to Venice, LA. He said Waveland/Bay St. Louis is bad. He was also down there right after the storm too. There is nothing left. David compared it to a war zone where bombs just went off on every street and blew everything up in its path.

My Mom is visiting me this week. She has not been over here since the hurricane, so I took her on the nickle tour. We started in Clermont Harbor in Hancock County. We drove by vacant slab after vacant slab. Drove her to downtown Waveland to look at more vacant slabs. Next, we drove over to Pass Christian, then Long Beach and finally Gulfport. More vacant slabs. She did get to see some busted up building as the Gulfport VA is still a mangled mess. She told me that Mississippi is far ahead in the cleanup efforts than Louisiana. I told her that is because you don't have to bribe a politician to get something done in Mississippi. She just laughed at the truth. We then went to Boomtown Casino for dinner and gambling, had a great time.......MGC

I was in Biloxi during the first weekend of June... hopefully, I'll get a chance to go down again soon (for military). There were some places that are open... majority, however, are just slabs of concrete sitting motionless. Just over 10months after the storm, something things are back together... but the rest, need work.

I can see why some of Waveland is not being repopulated and it's just lack of housing. We are in the the process of building a new fence for a guy who lost EVERYTHING in Waveland in Gulfport 5 miles N of I-10(new sub started right before K).I think in the next 10-20 years alot of the coastal cities are going N.Hell with the fact of knowing that Ins. S of I-10 is going to be high more condos, casinos and the sort some things are going to change it's inevitable.

MGC wrote:Frank, are you going to rebuild on the same slab? I've noticed a few folks on the beach that are doing just that. I don't understand the logic in rebuilding at the same elevation. This will happen again one day......MGC
not me... MGC my slab is 18 feet above sea level.. it will be a front patio for my new house, which will be 10 higher... I'll be 28 feet above sea level, and 2-3 feet above the surge level that occurred in my neighborhood from Katrina... I'm using 28-12x12x20 ft pilings, 10 feet buried in the ground with 1.5 yards of concrete holding each piling, and 10 feet up... first floor will be a parking garage and workshop
I've also noticed some people building back on their slabs, on the beach in GPT and in the St. Martin area... why is this occurring... the fact that the Biloxi nor Gulfport city councils did NOT adopt the new FEMA elevation advisory recommendations did not help..... on my lot on the beach per the city I can rebuild at 16 feet... YEAH RIGHT, that will do me alot of good... per the FEMA advisory I would have to go up to 19 feet, a little better but not good enough and still to low for my taste, so I'm going 28 feet.... 2x6 constrution, 3/4 in plywood exterior sheeting, and 3/4 in portland cement stucco exterior finish.. from what I've seen stucco finish seems to hold up better than wood or brick.... it will be a beefy house to say the least... metal hip roof... hurricane armor rated windows throughout... I'm doing everything possible to build for wind and just hope I'm high enough for no more water... 28 feet is pretty high, is it high enough only time will tell, but that's the plan, we get another storm with a 28 foot surge and I'm outta here, period...... hope to start later this week or next week at the latest......

thanks timNms... I lot of my relatives and friends that lived on the beach or near the bay have given up and moved... its sad but I just can't let it go... not yet...
