JMA's strongest typhoons

#1 Postby HurricaneBill » Mon Jul 10, 2006 11:31 pm

A typhoon reaching the equivalent of a Category 5 according to JMA is extremely rare. For it to happen, it would need a Dvorak rating of 8.0 and 10-minute sustained winds of 120 KT.

It has happened in the past, but not recently.

1978 Super Typhoon Rita 120 KT (10-min)

1979 Super Typhoon Tip 140 KT (10-min)

1980 Super Typhoon Wynne 120 KT (10-min)

1981 Super Typhoon Elsie 120 KT (10-min)

1982 Super Typhoon Bess 125 KT (10-min)

1982 Super Typhoon Mac 120 KT (10-min)

1983 Super Typhoon Abby 120 KT (10-min)

1984 Super Typhoon Vanessa 120 KT (10-min)

1985 Super Typhoon Dot 120 KT (10-min)

1986 Super Typhoon Lola 120 KT (10-min)

1990 Super Typhoon Flo 120 KT (10-min)

1991 Super Typhoon Yuri 120 KT (10-min)
