There is not going to be a morning when you wake up and the map has been updated to all of a sudden show warm anomalies across the Pacific. Yes, the Pacific is currently neutral and will either stay like this or slowly became warmer, signalling the beginning of an El Nino event. If you start to notice the anomalies getting more and more positive over a several week to several month period, then it will be safe to assume that you are witnessing the beginning of an El Nino. Until this transition to an El Nino event, if it occurs at all, we will still see the Pacific SST anomalies go through small fluxuations and remain in the neutral range, as is normal.
