When TPC will classifie Claudette as a hurricane?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

By 10 pm CDT...and won't surprise me if it's earlier (4 or 7 p.m.).

With a central pressure in the 988-989 mb range and flight level winds of 70 kts (81 mph)....Claudette is very close to hurricane intensity right now (likely 70-75 mph IMHO).

I'll say 7pm, but more than likely at 10pm. Let's see what she does when the sun goes down!

Hurricane Claudette at 4PM CST Monday, July 14

#8 Postby midlantwx » Mon Jul 14, 2003 2:51 pm

Look out for Hurricane Claudette at 4pm this afternoon.

If you live on the coast, batten down the hatches and take good care of yourselves. Let's hope this one isn't too bad and just moves on.

Hello midlantwx, nice to see you here. :D

Claudette won't "move on" at its current speed.

I say 4 today. It is looking better and if not at 4, then I assume the winds will at least be up to 70 mph.

Oil Rigs reporting strong winds......

#13 Postby midlantwx » Mon Jul 14, 2003 4:43 pm

Oil rigs out in the GOM are reporting winds above Hurricane Force. I read that at the National Hurricane Center.

We need to keep an eye on this one. Hard to tell what will happen with it.

I've been monitoring the NOAA P-3 reconnisance data on the FSU site, and on their final pass through the center, I saw a central pressure of 987 mb and flight level winds at 5000' of 72 kts (83 mph) in the east eyewall....that means 65 kts (75 mph) at the surface. I'll be very surprised if NHC doesn't upgrad Claudette to a hurricane at 7 p.m. CDT.

I'll have to vote 10 pm CDT tonight as well .. the circulation of the low clouds with new convection exploding around the center tonight may be what finally pushed Claudette into hurricane status ...
