In 1999

#1 Postby storms in NC » Sat Aug 19, 2006 10:46 am

In 1999 we got TD Dennis on aug 22 then Emily on Aug 26. Then Floyd on sept 8. So we are not that far behind. It only takes one any ways to do some harm.
Maybe we will see one soon. But they say the waters are not to warm as they were last year. And this year all the shear and dry air and ULL'S are killing off what we have had.

1999 was one of the less active years since 1995. We only got to Lenny. Of course, it's hard to forget storms like Floyd and Lenny.

1999 only had 12 storms

but of those 12, 8 became hurricanes (66.7%)

of those 8 hurricanes, 5 became majors (62.5%)

and all the majors became at least category 4

on a numbers note

Floyd caused more damage in the U.S then the entire 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003 seasons, and all of those seasons minus 1997 had more or the same amount of storms (2002 also had 12)

Floyd: 4.5 Billion
1995: 3.7 Billion
1996: 3.42 Billion
1997: 100 Million
1998: 2.8 Billion
2000: Under 100 Million
2002: 1 Billion
2003: 3.5 Billion

I pretty much rounded the numbers so dont yell at me

1998 would be more when u factor in damage from Georges to US territories

and I know we don't get monetry figures on storms that don't hit US regions but Mitch would be very expensive in the way that it basically completely destroyted the infrastructure of Honduras and Nicaragua particularly

Who can forget Floyd? Half the state of Florida evacuated from the East Coast to the West Coast then everyone was told "uh, it would still have 125 mph winds here" and then everyone tried to head to Atlanta.

Then of course it turned north at the last minute (thank God).

Man, I hated that storm.

I have read different numbers that would certainly go against Floyd being more costly than those seasons...IE

Georges in 1998 caused 5.9 Billion in FL, MS, AL , Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands included...Bonnie, also that year cause 720 million...Earl 79 Million...Frances 500 Million

1995's Opal caused 3.0 Billion, Allison 2 million, Erin $700 Million, jerry 46 million, Marilyn 1.5 Billion in US Virgin Is.,

I'm only adding damage in the U.S mainland but damage from Georges worldwide was likely about $5 Billion, and Mitch about $10 Billion plus 9,000 KNOWN deaths.
