We got the backside of Andrew at Cat 3. I remember three things about that storm. The first was the hard left when it hit the ridge. The second was a call from a friend in Kendall. The third was a later fishing trip to the the 10,000 islands. Andrew literally shaved the mangroves to the sand. They were just sandbars. Charley did some similar damage and Wilma as well. But after seeing these three..Andrew was the devil from hell. Thank goodness the storm was small in circumference. but for the unfortunate few that were in the center..a true nightmare. Charley was similar in that he was small in scope. But at approx. 25 miles from the eye..I lost half my roof shingles. Wilma got what was left.

This will be the first Andrew anniversary where we was NOT the costliest storm in U.S history. That title lasted for 13 years, 5 days. (August 24th 1992-August 29th 2005)
And Ironic that Andrews successor was on this day last year just a young Tropical Storm.
Tallys
Damage total: $26.5 Billion
Rank: 2nd (still sounds strange)
Deaths: 26 (39 indirect)
Peak Strength: 922mb, 165-175mph (Disputed)
Landfalls:
Eleuthera island: 150mph, 923mb
Key Biscyane/Homestead: 165mph 922mb (disputed)
Point Chevreuil, Louisiana: 120mph, 956mb

It made first landfall in the U.S. on Elliott Key within Biscayne National Park not Key Biscayne. Key Biscayne is north of Homestead.
