"Could Become a Depression in a Day or Two"??

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

"Could Become a Depression in a Day or Two"??

#1 Postby wxman57 » Tue Jul 15, 2003 5:51 pm

I suppose they're right. If it weakens some then it could become a depression.

Judge for yourself with this late afternoon shot:

I zoomed out a bit here and adde 700mb flow to emphasize likely track:

So, the question is, has there ever been a season with FIVE named storms before the end of July?

It looks well. I think it very well could be Danny or a TD right now, but they are probably not concerned because it is not a threat except to shipping interests.

In Response

#3 Postby wxman57 » Tue Jul 15, 2003 6:20 pm

In response to my own question, from 1900-2002, there have been only 4 seasons with 5 storms prior to the end of July:

1933 - 5 - total 21 storms
1936 - 5 - total 16 storms
1959 - 5 - total 11 storms
1966 - 5 - total 11 storms
1995 - 5 - total 19 storms

Wait a second though.....

Didn't Erin in 1995 develop into a tropical storm right on July 31? Maybe I'm wrong.

1997 had 5 (the first was a subtrop, much like this year. Subtrops just weren't named then) by mid July when Danny formed then we had another TD form east of the Islands.

The rest is historical boredom. Just shows that nothing is edged in stone. Just like 2000 when nothing formed until August and 15 named storms occurred

It does look like this feature has a chance. Will be something to watch. It doesn't look like the steering currents will change it from becoming a "fish storm," at this time.

That would be a first! :o I doubt it will happen, but I would not dismiss this thought completely.

Sure enough, (I hate to repeat myself - some members may not or may not try to read every post in each thread since there last visit) the steering pattern changed just ahead of, more so to the northwest of Tropical Depression #5, a northeast to southwest flow has formed ahead of the trough moving further into the Atlantic.
