TALLAHASSEE – Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center, is hanging up his tracking maps, but not before Gov. Jeb Bush and the Cabinet give a nod to his 34-years of public service.
Bush and Cabinet members will honor his, “service to Florida and his commitment to promoting hurricane awareness across the nation,” Bush spokeswoman Kristy Campbell said in a written statement.
Mayfield, 58, became director of the NHC in Coral Gables in January 2000. He retires at the end of this year.
He will be honored this morning at 9 a.m. at the Cabinet meeting in the Capitol.

Never thought I'd respect anyone as much as I did John Hope but I was wrong Max Mayfield is right up there. A credit to his agency, to his science and to all Americans in general. Next time you feel your government is full of lazy loafers remember there are thousands of Max Mayfields out there working under the radar. A hurricane expert but a man for all seasons.
Enjoy the time off Max but I know those cameras will be searching for you when clouds start to swirl off our coasts.
