Timely Reminder

#1 Postby JenBayles » Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:27 pm

Like most people, I waited until the weather started getting cold before even thinking about having my chimney cleaned and inspected. I completely forgot to have it done last year and figured I'd better get it done soon. I'm so glad I called the chimney sweeps! Turns out I had creosote buildup so thick it nearly choked the opening closed up top. It was a creosote fire just waiting to happen.

General rule of thumb is to add this to your annual list of must-do maintenance - even if you rarely use your fireplace. Mortar gets old and water can invade your walls if the chimney isn't properly maintained. If you use your fireplace regularly, figure on a cleaning after each cord of wood burned. Since I'm such a firebug - I probably need to do this twice a year. You can find more info on fireplace safety here:

Just thought I'd throw this out there as a reminder. I'd hate for any of my S2K friends to lose their homes this winter over something that is so easy to forget, yet easy to get done. I paid $118 for the full cleaning and inspection. Inspection only is $60 in my area.

Good reminder jen. I had mine cleaned out last year and then never used it! I should be good to go this year. It's screened at the top so no birds can build a nest.

A side note...if you use your fireplace make sure your smoke detectors are in top working condition.
