Looks like a director/ producer error that left her standing there like an idiot. I'm no fan of Katie's, but it seems more of a production problem than hers.

Where is the meltdown? I can't believe they left her standing there for that long of a period. If that was me, heads would roll.

The last story was supposed to be about three minutes long, but when it wasn't ready, no one in the control room knew what to do.

Mistake 1: There should be a plan for when that happens

Mistake 2: It would have been better to cut to black or call up some more promos. Even a Two-and-a-Half Men spot would have made more sense.

Mistake 3: Once the decision was made to go back to the desk, it would have been much better if the set was empty rather than making your anchor look like a moron.

While people can certainly make mistakes, there is little room for them in that type of business. My bet is that someone has been reassigned or fired.

I agree. It looks really bad. Even most LOCAL stations don't handle it that way(which is basically not handle it at all).

I havn't enjoyed CBS since Rather retired.

The hard news format without the soft news stories that take up too much of today's newscasts just has not been the same since then

Helen that was out of left field  I really don't think it had anything to do with it. It wasn't really a big deal and I can't believe anyone thinks it is. It was a mistake on someones part but really not a big deal. Someone must be bored to put that on you tube.

Meltdown???? Where???

The only meltdown I saw was the production/technical portion of the show unraveling.

So someone made a mistake. We all have made mistakes. Don't be so quick to "fire" someone without knowing what happened. And be careful...you might make a mistake someday.......

I assume that was directed to me since you quoted the word "fire" and I was the only one to use it.

I wouldn't fire someone, but the CBS Evening News is watched by ten percent of Americans who are watching TV at 6:30 and a lot is expected of producers, directors, and crew. My point was that in that business, you can easily get fired for one mistake. The last time a mistake big enough to get publicity was made on the CBS Evening News, the people responsible were fired.

It's just the nature of the business. I'm not the one who made it that way.

I've worked in the media... and there were some days where the producer report was 5 pages long... we were very lucky to get the news report done. I've had TD's, Directors and Producers screaming at the same time.... and the floor people pulling their eyes out... those were fun days! It looks all pretty to viewers, but there are some days it is a COMPLETE mess behind the scenes. There were several occasions where the tape from the lead story wasn't in the tape player.... just as hit roll... the tape was thrown in.... thank goodness it was set! When you are short stories.... anchors have been known to stretch... this was 2:45 of stretch time!

CBS should have something ready like... a montage of LA police beatings.

The movie has been removed because content was used without consent from CBS. Now I cant see what happened!

This copyright crap is getting WAY out of hand.

Anyway... basically what happened is this. The audio for a story didn't work, so they cut that segment, went back to Katie who closed out the program like she normally would(only 3 minutes early), for about the next minute and a half the theme music plays while the credits roll and we see the studio while she stands at the corner of the anchor desk, then a couple of promos for the news run, it comes back to more theme music for about a minute and she's STILL standing there before it goes off.

Obviously a big production meltdown.
