Sad holiday.....but I'm STILL thankful

#1 Postby azsnowman » Thu Nov 23, 2006 10:48 am

Don't know how many noticed but I've been absent for the past 2.5 to 3 days....we had a tragedy on Tues. After 72 hours I finally got 6 hours of sleep last night.

I'm doing ok now...being the rookie criminal investigator and this was my first major case, it was tough..

It's like I told the neighbors yesterday evening, this year gives the TRUE meaning to Thanksgiving.

The first calls went out to Pinetop firefighters at approximately 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 about an explosion at a home in the 1700 block of Rim Road, south of White Mountain Summer Homes.

According to reports, a man who lived at the home fired several shots from a shotgun at firefighters and neighbors and when police arrived he pointed the weapon at them.
The man, George Marshall Lingo, 59, then turned the gun on himself. A Pinetop police officer fired one round at Lingo but missed. Police say Lingo died from the self-inflicted gunshot.
The home was leveled by the blast. According to neighbors police had attempted to serve a warrant Monday but the man would not answer the door. For more on this story see Friday's Independent.

So sorry to hear that! Crime does not take a holiday, as we all know.

I would guess that he probably had the gas wide open and the gunshot set off the explosion.

Nope...the fire dept. completed their investigation and it was indeed a gas explosion:

Terence Corrigan – The Independent
Pinetop Fire Deputy Chief Stuart Bishop confers with other fire officials at the home on Rim Road that was destroyed by an explosion. The resident reportedly shot at neighbors and aimed his shotgun at police before he shot and killed himself.
PINETOP-LAKESIDE - A 59-year-old man shot and killed himself Tuesday after pointing a shotgun at neighbors and police and setting his trailer on fire.
George M. Lingo reportedly had been acting erratically and was described as emotionally unstable.
Police received a call at 9:20 a.m. reporting an individual shooting at people. While responding to the residence in the area of Rim Road and Sierra Pine Loop, police were told that an explosion had rocked the residence and the residence was on fire.
Firefighters were first on the scene. They observed a man with a shotgun running back and forth in the forested area behind the house.
When officers arrived, the man identified as Lingo reportedly ran and hid behind a tree, initially crouching down. Cmdr. Rusty Rogers said the preliminary investigation indicates Lingo shot himself after pointing the shotgun at officers. A Pinetop officer fired at Lingo but missed. Lingo apparently died of the self-inflicted gunshot.
Lingo's body was taken to Tucson to undergo an autopsy.
Police confirmed that an explosion set the trailer on fire. The explosion appears to have been caused by an oven gas leak that ignited. Contrary to some news reports, police have not found evidence of a methamphetamine lab at the scene.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the trailer was fully engulfed. It burned to the ground because firefighters had to wait until the scene was secure before starting to battle the flames. By that time, firefighters focused more on saving other nearby structures.
"We could have lost other homes," Pinetop Fire Deputy Chief Stuart Bishop said.
Lakeside and Show Low fire departments were called in to assist Pinetop Fire.
The trailer was located at 1763 E. Rim Road, south of White Mountain Summer Homes and about 1.5 miles from the Smoke Shop in the White Mountain Club Estates subdivision. The property backed up to the WMAT reservation.

Erratic behavior
Police had attempted to serve Lingo with an injunction and an arrest warrant on Monday, but he apparently refused to open the door.
The case stemmed from an incident in mid-July. At 10 a.m. on July 14, officers responded to Lingo's residence in reference to a noise complaint by neighbors. That same evening, police were called again when neighbors reported Lingo was pointing bright lights at their home. When officers arrived, they observed 10 flood and halogen lights "so bright they could barely see."
Lingo reportedly told police that the neighbors had bugged his house with screws and he was trying to prevent them from doing it again.
Lingo was arrested for disorderly conduct and a court date was set for last Friday, Nov. 17. When he failed to appear, the court issued a warrant for his arrest. Police attempted to serve the warrant at the same time that Constable Ryan Reinhold tried to serve an injunction issued by the Pinetop Justice Court against Lingo because of his harassing behavior towards neighbors.
"He refused to open the door to us so we planned to attempt to serve the warrant and injunction at a later time," Reinhold said.
Reinhold later returned with two officers. "I was able to see into the residence through an open window - the house was in disarray, empty prescription bottles were scattered around the floor, food was on the bed, and a cat was inside the house. Several axes and hatchets were by the entry door," Reinhold said.
The next door neighbor told Reinhold that Lingo was emotionally unstable and was taking prescribed medication. "The neighbor was concerned about Mr. Lingo's own well-being but also worried about his increasingly erratic behavior to neighbors," Reinhold said.
The neighbor said Lingo was not demonstrating violent behavior at that time, but he had previously made threats with a shot gun and a hammer and had also threatened a FedEx delivery driver.
"The neighbors were scared of him," Rogers said.
Lingo was known to be reclusive, sometimes awake for 3 to 4 nights in a row and could be heard talking to himself. He apparently rarely left the residence except to ride his bicycle (he did not have a car) to Eddie's Country Store for groceries.
"A lot of his problems seem to be recent," Rogers said.
The only other contact Lingo had with police was when he reported damage to his mailbox in 2005. There are reports that he was despondent over a recent break up.
The case is still under investigation.
