possible wintry precip along central Gulf coast

#1 Postby Opal storm » Tue Jan 16, 2007 5:10 pm

This is from the New Olreans NWS.They actually had snow/sleet forecasted for tonight in Biloxi but they changed it back to rain.Mobile AFD also mentioning a chance for sleet. But man is it cold outside,we've been in the low 40's all day here with a strong northerly breeze.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW ORLEANS LA
1215 PM CST TUE JAN 16 2007

...LIGHT WINTRY PRECIPITATION POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...

AN ARCTIC AIRMASS WILL CONTINUE TO FILTER IN ACROSS EAST CENTRAL
LOUISIANA...AND EXTREME SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH-CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI
THIS AFTERNOON. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN NEARLY STEADY
THIS AFTERNOON BEFORE FALLING TO NEAR OR SLIGHTLY BELOW FREEZING
OVERNIGHT.

WITH THE COLD AIR IN PLACE...A MIX OF LIGHT SLEET AND LIGHT RAIN HAS
BEEN REPORTED IN MCCOMB IN THE LAST HOUR. A MIXTURE OF LIGHT SLEET
AND LIGHT RAIN WILL CONTINUE TO BE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
AND OVERNIGHT HOURS. THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANCE THAT POCKETS OF
LIGHT FREEZING RAIN MAY RESULT IF THE SURFACE TEMPERATURES SHOULD
FALL BELOW FREEZING BEFORE THE RAINS END. DUE TO WARM SOIL
TEMPERATURES...ACCUMULATIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED ON ROADWAYS...BUT
EXPOSED BRIDGES AND ELEVATED SURFACES MAY SEE A LIGHT GLAZE FORM
TONIGHT.

PERSONS WHO MAY NEED TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE AREA TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY
WEDNESDAY MORNING SHOULD BE ADVISED OF POSSIBLE ICE FORMING ON
BRIDGES AND PLAN THEIR TRAVEL ACCORDINGLY. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED
TO WARM ABOVE FREEZING WEDNESDAY MORNING TO MELT ANY ACCUMULATIONS
THAT MAY OCCUR.

BALDWIN INLAND-CHOCTAW-CLARKE-GEORGE-GREENE-MOBILE INLAND-MONROE-PERRY-STONE-WASHINGTON-WAYNE-WILCOX-
134 PM CST TUE JAN 16 2007

...BRIEF PERIODS OF LIGHT SLEET POSSIBLE TODAY...

...BRIEF PERIODS OF LIGHT SLEET OR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT...

A STRONG ARCTIC AIRMASS CONTINUES ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI AND SOUTHWEST ALABAMA TODAY WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING INTO AND THROUGH THE MIDDLE 30S. PATCHY LIGHT RAINS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE REGION INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS BEFORE DIMINISHING LATE TONIGHT. PERIODIC PATCHES OF VERY LIGHT SLEET WILL ALSO BE NOTED AT TIMES. AS TEMPERATURES DROP INTO THE LOWER 30S OVERNIGHT...THE PATCHY LIGHT RAIN MAY FREEZE ON CONTACT IN SPOTS...MAINLY ON A FEW EXPOSED ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES.

WHILE SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL PROBLEMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED LATE
TODAY AND TONIGHT...MOTORISTS SHOULD SLOW DOWN AND BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ISOLATED SLICK PATCHES ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT.

It's nasty out there! And it seems like it's just going to get nastier.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some sleet bouncing around down here late tonight. My thermometer is sitting at 34*F and more light precipitation is moving in.

I'm betting that points from McComb - Hattiesburg - State Line and north get a taste of sleet or light snow. Maybe we'll get lucky on the Coast. Maybe.

We've been having light sleet off and on since I got home from school at 3:30 today. The top of my car is covered with a sheet of ice. The steps from the kitchen door (facing north) are slick with ice, as well.
NWS has us under a "winter weather advisory" until 9AM tomorrow. No news on school closures in this area and probably won't know about that until the last minute tomorrow morning, if conditions warrant.
Radar showing more sleet/snow moving in our direction. Temp at Pine Belt Regional Airport (a few miles northeast of Hattiesburg and about 18 miles SW of me) is at 34 at the 9PM reading. Looks like travel in the am will be interesting, to say the least, if this continues thru the night as it appears to be going to do.

A side note...heard on the weather channel this afternoon before dark that there is an arctic front that is supposed to move south and affect the NE and SE US by Thursday of next week. The Met. said that the one supposed to be moving in then will make this one look like nothing. OUCH...I was enjoyin' the nice 70's :)

Sounds about right: it is going to be Senior Bowl week here next week. It wouldn't be the Senior Bowl without a cold, bitter rain!
