Probably because there was a Cyclone Wendy back in February 1972. It was at least a Category 3. JTWC had it as a Category 4. It's possible Wendy was stronger. There are reports that the barometric pressure was as low as 890mb.
Anyways, Wendy was destructive to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, caused at least 4 deaths, and did threaten Australia at one point.
Wendy had already been retired from the SPAC lists of names. Australia probably felt it was appropriate to retire it also, to prevent another destructive Wendy from moving east into the SPAC.

It was used in the 1971 season yes. BT says min pressure of 942hPa (Direct observation) at 2300GMT on 4/2/1972 just to the north of the main island of New Caledonia as the centre moved overland for a while. No wind speeds are given this far back unfortunately.
Edit - This only includes the part of the track near to Brisbane's AOR from around 165E. I'm still trying to get hold of the Nadi BT file.
