March 23: World Meteorological Day

#1 Postby Coredesat » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:04 pm

I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in global weather, but since no one reads global weather, here it is. Tomorrow (well, today UTC) is World Meteorological Day, the anniversary of the founding of the World Meteorological Organization in 1950:

The WMO wrote:Every year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its 187 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

Each year has a theme, and this year's theme is polar meteorology and its impact on the global climate. The next International Polar Year research project (which will actually last two years) begins today, and its goal is to better understand the effects of changes in the polar regions on the rest of the world.

More info can be found at the World Meteorological Day website - http://www.wmo.int/wmd/

(And yes, I know the day has the unfortunate acronym "WMD".)

It would probably be difficult to answer that question without getting political, lol. Weapons of Mass Destruction. On-topic, though:

I went down to the Singapore National Environment Agency Met Service Department exhibition today. Nothing great about it, I was rather disappointed.
