MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A car going the wrong way on a divided highway collided head-on with a Greyhound bus early Saturday, killing one person and injuring 20, police said.
The car, driven by a young woman, was headed southbound in a northbound lane on Interstate 85 at the time of the 3:05 a.m. crash, said police Lt. Mark Drinkard.
The woman at the wheel of the car was killed, Drinkard said. Her name was not released.
The bus, carrying 49 passengers and two drivers, had just left the Montgomery terminal and was headed for Columbus, Ga., and then on to Atlanta, Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmsbee said.
Drinkard said 20 people were taken to two hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. Seventeen passengers were taken to Baptist Medical Center South, said hospital spokesman Tommy McKinnon. All were awake and alert, he said.
“I believe we have admitted nine patients into the hospital. Most if not all the injuries were non-critical,†McKinnon said.
Folmsbee said relief buses were brought in to take uninjured passengers on to their destination once they are ready to travel.
