Tainted pet food linked to Ind. chickens Mon Apr 30, 8:36 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Chicken feed in some farms in Indiana contained byproducts from pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten imported from China, two federal agencies said Monday.

The Agriculture Department and the Food and Drug Administration said in a joint statement that officials learned of the link between the chicken feed and tainted pet food as part of the investigation into imported rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten that have been found to contain the industrial chemical melamine and related compounds.

An estimated 30 broiler poultry farms and eight breeder poultry farms in Indiana received contaminated feed in early February and fed it to poultry within days of receiving it, the agencies said. Other farms will probably be identified as having received contaminated feed, they added.

All the broilers believed to have been fed contaminated products have been processed, while the breeders are under voluntary hold by flock owners, the agencies said.

The FDA and USDA said the likelihood of human illness from eating chicken fed the contaminated product is very low. With no evidence of harm to humans, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals was being issued, the agencies said.

On Saturday, the FDA and USDA cited similar reasons for not issuing a recall after determining that hogs in some states may have been fed the tainted pet food.

More than 100 brands of pet food have been recalled since March 16 because they were contaminated with melamine. An unknown number of dogs and cats have been sickened or died after eating chemical-laced pet food.

Hey to get serious again, there's a home not far from mine. On the corner of a busy 4 way stop intersection. Small, ranch home, 3 BR's, 1 BA home. 1/4 acre yard but this family puts that yard to good use. Not only do they garden, they have a compost pile and a chicken coop. Yep - chickens! They never use mulch but rather ground covers that produce some type of herb or seeds. The wife is always outside picking vegetables, etc. Or fruit off their fruit bearing trees. I was inside their house once and they also can their own food. The only thing missing in this modest sized home and yard is a cow! I always think this family is probably well prepared for an emergency. A real throw back to how a farming family would supply their own food. It looks like to me this family provides their own vegetables, some fruit and fresh eggs.

You'll be sitting at this 4 way intersection and see one of their chickens walk by, very well fed and plump. Actually a very pretty chicken but again, out here in suburbia where every other family blasts their lawn with chemicals (we don't), doesn't plant a garden, and eats fast food on a regular basis, this family looks straight out of the Little House on the Prairie books!

Sorry, got on a tangent there....lol

Tainted poultry has entered food supply
Millions of chickens ate feed containing melamine, government officials say

Tainted chicken enters food supply
May 1: NBC's Tom Costello reports on reports that chickens in the U.S. ate
feed tainted with the same substance responsible for the deaths of possiblty
thousands of pets.

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Adminstration said Tuesday that as many as 3
million chickens that may have been given contaminated feed containing
melamine have already been eaten by consumers, according to NBC News.

Although the chickens, which came from 38 poultry farms in Indiana, have
already made their way into the food supply, there appears to be minimal or no
health risk to humans, the government said.

The Agriculture Department and the FDA said in a joint statement Monday that
officials learned of the link between the chicken feed and tainted pet food as
part of the investigation into imported rice protein concentrate and wheat
gluten that have been found to contain the industrial chemical melamine and
related compounds.
The affected poultry farms and breeder poultry farms fed the contaminated feed
to poultry within days of receiving it, the agencies said. Other farms will
probably be identified as having received tainted feed, they added.

All the broilers believed to have been fed contaminated products have been
processed, while the breeders are under voluntary hold by flock owners, the
agencies said. The farms were given the contaminated feed in early February.

Birds that were given the contaminated feed will not be allowed to enter the
U.S. food supply. Farmers will be compensated if they destroy the birds that
consume the feed.

The agencies also said there was a “low-risk” to humans and no food recalls
were expected at this time. They are uncertain how many chickens were
involved, how many entered the food supply or where they went.

“We haven’t completed counting yet,” said USDA spokesman Keith Williams.

Pet food tainted with melamine was also found in feed given to hogs. Last
week, the USDA said about 6,000 hogs in six states — California, Kansas, New
York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Utah — may have been given the
contaminated feed. On Saturday, the agencies cited similar reasons for not
issuing a recall.

More than 100 brands of pet food have been recalled since March 16 because
they were contaminated with melamine. An unknown number of dogs and cats have
been sickened or died after eating chemical-laced pet foo

If I recall correctly, weren't there two Soylent products -- green for certain days and yellow, maybe, for other days? If Soylent Green was people, what was the other one? I bet it tasted like chicken.
