New Arctic Ice Cap Story A Hoax


2 May 07 - "A study, published yesterday in Geophysical Research Letters, reports an historical review of satellite and other data indicating that the extent of Arctic sea ice at the end of the summer melt season in September has been declining since 1953. The news stories twist this statistical fact into scare stories claiming that sea level will rise by seven meters.

In fact, as anyone who observes ice melting in a cold drink can determine, when floating ice melts, the water level remains the same or falls very slightly.

Never reported is the fact that the last major study of the Greenland ice sheet [Zwally, et al. Journal of Glaciology (2005)] showed a slight increase in ice mass from 1992-2002. The one- to two-mile thick Greenland ice sheet was thinning at the margins but growing by a greater extent inland.

As Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu of the Alaska Arctic Research Center in Alaska noted, the extent of Arctic sea ice melt in the 1920s was greater than today (with far less contribution from human-produced carbon dioxide), and was followed by a period of thickening. Akasofu called Al Gore's movie "science fiction."

The theory that human-produced carbon dioxide produces climate warming has no scientific validity, and has been amply refuted by hundreds of leading scientists in thousands of papers.

But far worse than the methodological problems of the Arctic sea ice study are today's news reports of it. These represent the height of politically motivated irresponsibility. At bottom, greenhouse warming is a hoax. Its purpose is to stop industrial development, reduce population, and condemn two thirds of the world to continued poverty and misery. As the science isn't there to prove it, the theory can only be justified by fabrications of the sort circulating on wire services today.

I'm here to show the public that there is more then one said to this coin, I can't wait for the climate of the Northwest to go back to the snowy winters it once had. I think that should start over the next 5 or so years to.

Huh?? I have not seen one single news story which claims that the melting of the arctic sea ice will lead to any significant sea-level rise, let alone seven meters. Since the author fails to link to any example of such a story, I'd say it is this claim which is a "hoax."

This is a typical denialist tactic - lie about what is being said about climate change and then attack the false story they just invented.

If you can find a "news story" which makes this claim, please supply a link. But I don't think you will.

This is another lie. I've seen the Zwally et al. study reported many times, for instance here, here, here here and on and on ...

Furthermore, the author neglects the fact that increased precipitation in Greenland's interior is a predicted effect of global warming nad also the fact that in the most recent five years the ice loss at the perimiter has accelerated dramatically and Greenland is now losing ice mass.

I don't think that's an accurate statement. There was a significant decline from the mid 20's through the 30's, but I'm sure I've read a report comparing that period to the present one and the current decline is both larger and more rapid. I'll see if I can find this ...

I can't wait for the climate of the Northwest to go back to the snowy winters it once had. I think that should start over the next 5 or so years to.

Even if that were to happen, a regional phenomenon like that doesn't prove anything about the global average. How many more decades of reckless disregard for the consequences of our actions are you going to insist on?

Right- because the displacement locked up in sea ice still contains the same mass of water as an ice-free Arctic Ocean. The sea level rise is going to come from melting land caps calving off Greenland and Antarctica pouring millions of gallons of new water into the world's oceans. The only effect melting sea ice has on this whole situation is exposing coastal ice caps to warmer and moister weather patterns thereby accelerating the melting of the land glaciers.
