Whatever you do stay away from Vista Home Basic. It's Windows ME all over again and that was the worst piece of###### Microsoft ever pushed on the world. I run Vista Business at work and it's OK. Nothing special but it's not like we have much of a choice
Make sure and get plenty of RAM ( 2 GB minimum) in the new PC and a high end video card.

I know little about computers but I have the new Vista Home Basic Premium. I like it but for one thing. It has a problem with Java and I kept getting a message that it no longer supported it. This is the site they send you to. It might give you more info that I don't really understand.

Athlon and Intel differ in what you want the computer for.AMD's are good for gaming and things,AMD's do run rather warm though. It's mainly just personal preference.I know lots of people who were happy with their Intel and others that preferred AMD. As for Vista,it's an evil marketing scheme, how they're only releasing the new Direct X for Vista,so if one is a gamer or uses Direct X software they will eventually need to get vista. But Vista needs an insanely high amount of RAM and other hardware requirements. And the software and hardware support isn't great yet,due to lack of correct support and drivers. Can't say that I wouldn't install it if I had the right requirements though.

We got a new Dell around Christmas and it came with a Vista Upgrade at the first of this year. We got the software in the mail months ago and have yet to install it.
Not only will you have to worry about all your hardware being compatible but also any software you have. My uncle got Vista and can't use any of his picture editing software and its only about 2 years old. So I was scared to install it fearing I will have to replace all my programs and our 2 YO HP-all in one printer. My husband also went to different web sites reading new Vista user comments and reviews and there were more negative than positive. I haven't heard any good things about Vista at all. I think the only good feedback I have heard was from Brent. I am kinda glad you started this thread though because I want to hear other peoples opinions from here as well. I would love to use our new software but Im scared to install it because of all the 'bad talk'. I guess I will sit on it for a while or so until they come out with something better. I would research it some more online before you buy.

Mac for Windows?? Based on what I have heard about Vista: Vista may "borrowed" a lot from OS X, but OS X is better than Vista. I will agree with you on XP though. I use on Parallels (VM machine) on my laptop and at work. Never had too much trouble with it. It doesn't have the fancy eye candy of Vista, but it works.

I was very anti-Vista until I finally had enough of my low RAM old laptop and broke down and bought a new HP notebook. The one I got has 2 GB ram, and 1.63 Gh processor, with Vista Home Premium. Honestly, I haven't had any issues with software, except PC Anywhere that I used to use for work (I just use go to my PC now). I've gotten used to Vista, and think it's pretty good now. I can also tell it's much easier to start out with a new comp. that has Vista than it is to upgrade an existing comp. We upgraded one of my mom's laptops to Vista and it was such a pain to find the old documents that were on the comp., etc.
Basically, as long as you have enough RAM, Vista won't be that bad for ya....

I have had no problems with it(I have Home Premium actually), I've had it for 3 1/2 months now(I got a new laptop with it the day Vista came out!). . I only have 1 GB of RAM on this and have had no issues, although most of what I do is just surfing(a lot, lol) and a little editing on Movie Maker.
