I have not been able to input my $0.02 into this issue, as I have been in Virginia. My opinion is that this situation is the LAST thing the NHC needs during Hurricane Season. This is the first time I recall a munity, to such an extent, occuring in the NHC. I know they did not lose my confidence in them and that I agree things need to be looked at more closely, in terms of funding in the entire weather sector. I think the director stepped out of line somewhat, but the staff stepped WAY out of line by munitying against him the way I heard they did. What would of happend if there was a Cat 4 sitting off a coastline somewhere while they were fighting? Budget short falls do not lower my confidence in them getting their job done, arguing and munities do. You cannot perform a job to the best of your abilities if you are fighting and holding a grudge.

As citizens, we must support them, obey them, and never question them (when we question them, we are the ones causing mutiny)...furthermore, since we are not part of these organizations and do not have any of their credentials or powers, we are inferior to them in knowledge...as a result, they know what is best for us and we should take all of their actions with confidence and faith. If NOAA and NHC want Proenza out, then I support them 100%. Once again, they know what is best. We should stop questioning and just accept.

Are you serious?? First of all, he didn't bring politics into the discussion.

Secondly, "we must support them, obey them, and never question them"?? Sorry, but as taxpayers - you know, the people who PAY their salaries and pay the $$ that goes into their budget - we have every right, a duty in fact, to question something our government is doing if it is not serving the public interest.

I think as Schlitz suspects Destructions92 is not being serious here, but is actually mocking those who defended the govt. position. Its what he sees as their real position. He also looks to be mocking the moderators when he says 'please lock this thread, politics involved'. In both cases he's actually poking fun. (At those who defend the govt. and at the moderators themselves). Pretty crafty,this Destructions92.

Under the Constitution of the United States, it is not only our DUTY but our RIGHT to question everything the Government does and hold everyone in it accountable for their actions. A lot of good men and women have died over the years to ensure those rights.

Let's hope we can make it through the hurricane season without another uprising from the National Hurricane Center staff.

They're a very tetchy bunch.
If they don't like you, they'll just petition you to oblivion, and the next thing you know, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will swoop down and make it all legit with a report that faults you for creating a "negative work environment."

Apparently, recently departed director Bill Proenza created a negative work environment at the Tropical Prediction Center (TPC) by caring too much about an aging weather satellite, and griping that NOAA was spending millions on its birthday party rather than on hurricane research.

He sounds like an awful boss. A little too interested in prediction, which it turns out, is not seen as a plus at the Tropical Prediction Center.

"The short term ability of the TPC to provide accurate and timely information was put at risk due to the TPC director's disruptive conduct and the lack of trust between many staff and the director," the report said.

"The negative work environment, exacerbated by the director, has had - and is likely to continue to have - a major deleterious impact on the center's ability to fulfill its mission, if he is allowed to return to his position."

I'm not sure how asking to replace an aging satellite is "disruptive" or that highlighting the need for a bigger research budget constitutes a "major deleterious impact," but the message is clear to the next guy.

Don't make a fuss.

All it took for Proenza to get the boot were the signatures of 23 of the 49 staff members - not even a majority vote. So it's a pretty sticky task to step in now, trying to run an organization that can stage a successful coup by simply voting you out with a popularity contest.

And I worry that the new guy in charge, Ed Rappaport, may have his hands full with a crew that still has the taste of the fresh kill in their mouths.
