Interesting read, but very one sided. The article basically says that 1) NHC forecasters are not collaborating enough with researchers, especially those outside NOAA, and are therefore not availing themselves of the latest and greatest tools developed elsewhere, and 2) money for research has been slashed. A counterexample against point #1 perhaps would be the use of the FSU superensemble to refine their track forecasts. It is also unclear to what degree this lack of collaboration has to do with the outside researchers themselves; after all, there is some ego in everything. As for SLOSH, the WFO, who has actual forecast responsibility for their area, is using a local university tool, so chalk one up to proper government-university cooperation.
