Nice example of open cell pattern, west of Iberian Peninsula

#1 Postby Pedro Fernández » Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:13 am

Here is an image from TERRA satellite (MODIS sensor) that shows a very impressive open cell pattern accompaning a broken cold front which had just crossed over the Iberian Peninsula yesterday evening.

Maritime Polar Air Mass created a favourable atmosphere for open stormcells development and allowed to the broken cold front to give nice rainfalls in many cities and towns of my country (snowfalls from 900/1000 m. asl and higher, even freezing rain over some places). Note that opencells don't come inland. Only Portugal was affected by storm-showers, showing the vital importance of the Atlantic Ocean humidity.
