That was a big truck. Sources tell me it is on Youtube somewhere. They ( my insiders) say it was unloading all night. Hummm

The Portastorm Weather Center is predicting snow in the Texas Panhandle tonight ... oh yeah, so is the National Weather Service!

In the past, CaptinCrunch has referred to a Halloween analog as a quasi-predictor of DFW winter weather for the coming season. The normals for Oct 31 are: 73 and 52. The current forecast is 75 and 50. Right about normal.

We need maps Portastorm!!! It's been a pretty mild October here which is pretty indicative of what will follow in winter. There's been cutoff lows over the Great Lakes so I think that will continue. Usually that means a dry pattern with shots of cooler air behind that big low here in Texas. Of course wintry precip chances usually occur in the same frames every year, late nov, between Christmas and New Years, the second week or so of January and early February based on the past few seasons. Just my two cents.

Btw Houston is due for an early Dec snowfall ;) and DFW is on schedule for a March snow every other year!

Off topic, but I was just on the St. Louis NWS looking at the weather expected for Game 6 of the World Series tonight. They have an article about a cold front in 1911 that dropped temps very drastically after it passed. Worth a read for you winter weather enthusiasts. To summarize, at St. Louis the high prior to frontal passage hit 78; the low was 18. The next day the high was 20.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=11/11/1911coldsnap

Another Weather Bureau report noted: "In St. Louis the temperature was 75° at 6:10 pm on the 11th, when the change began, and in 10 minutes it had fallen to 49°, and by 1 a.m on the 12th it had fallen to 17°."

I was reading back through the last winter thread, what a ride that was. We got teased for the first half of winter and then got spoiled again for the last half.

After getting spoiled the past few years with snow, I am preparing myself for a disappointing winter season. I don't like making predictions because it seems that winter is unpredictable most of the time. But, I look forward to going on the ride again with you all.

Should be fun as always.

Last year Halloween H.85/L.53/AVG.69 was above normal on avg (63). Nov was warm, Dec didn't get cold till Christmas, and winter was over by the 15th of February. Even with the ice and snow for the Super Bowl Winter of 2010-2011 averaged out above normal for temps and below average for precip.

Even though a La Nina is forecast for this winter I think NTX will see something closer to a ENSO netural winter. With that being said I see winter 2011-2012 being a normal winter for Temps, but still below normal precip. I think we will see another bought of ice and snow this winter and a few good cold snaps, but the winter we are all hoping for wont come till next winter 2012-2013 when we head back to El Nino/Netural conditions.

Props to the GFS&ECMWF they picked up the possibility of some wintery precipitation since last Friday/Saturday for the panhandle.

Wow, Amarillo could see around an inch of snow.

Check out their 'normal' temperature for today:

High: 69
Low: 42

It's great to know that they can get snow despite those high averages. That's my average low in Dec/Feb so hopefully we can get that too! :D

Remember, they are in altitude. Higher ground...

Yeah, I know elevation makes colder temperatures but their record low for today is only 25 which makes it surprising that they already got snow. :cold:

I found some cool Amarillo snow statistics:

In Amarillo, the average date of the first inch of snowfall in a season is December 5.
The first inch falls in October on average about once per decade (but has not happened since 1996).

And one more thing - how does Amarillo get snow during July/Aug with record lows in the 50s? I saw it on the NWS page:

At the NWS in Amarillo they have already observed 2.5 inches of snow!!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AMARILLO TX
757 AM CDT THU OCT 27 2011

.UPDATE...
MAIN CHANGES WERE TO ADJUST POPS...WEATHER...AND TEMPERATURES.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A MESOSCALE BAND OF SNOW HAS LOCALLY DUMPED UPWARDS OF 3 INCHES OF
SNOW ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS PANHANDLE. AT THE NWS OFFICE IN
AMARILLO...WE HAVE MEASURED 2.5 INCHES OF SNOW.
PHONE CALLS AROUND
THE SOUTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST TEXAS PANHANDLE INDICATE MOST AREAS
HAVE RECEIVED BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCHES OF SNOW. 1200 UTC KAMA SOUNDING
DATA INDICATES A RELATIVELY DEEP MELTING LAYER /5000 FT/ WITH A MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURE OF 0.6 C WITHIN THIS LAYER. STEPPING OUTSIDE...WE FELT
SOME SLEET PELLETS MIXED IN WITH THE SNOW. BASED ON THIS...ADDED A
MIXTURE OF SNOW...SLEET...AND RAIN TO THE GRIDS FOR THE WESTERN TWO-
THIRDS OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE. THINK SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FOR THE
REMAINDER OF THIS MORNING WILL BE LIGHT WITH LESS THAN 1 INCH AT ALL
LOCATIONS.

ELECTED NOT TO CANCEL THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR ANY
ADDITIONAL COUNTIES AT THIS TIME SINCE RADAR TRENDS INDICATE A MIXED
PRECIPITATION BAND IS BEGINNING TO MOVE INTO HARTLEY COUNTY. AFTER
THIS BAND EXITS HARTLEY COUNTY...WE MAY BE ABLE TO CLEAR
DALLAM...HARTLEY...AND SHERMAN COUNTIES FROM THE ADVISORY. DUE TO
THE SNOW COVER...ADJUSTED HIGHS DOWNWARD SIGNIFICANTLY ACROSS THE
SOUTHWESTERN TEXAS PANHANDLE. STILL THINK SHOWERS WILL LINGER
INTO EARLY THIS AFTERNOON SO NO CHANGES WERE MADE TO POPS FOR THIS
AFTERNOON. UPDATED PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN SENT.

Sun is out! :double: The rain sure is taking its time to get here, I am looking forward to a chilly night in the upper 40s with a light rain.

Nice way to celebrate a World Series.

My 11 yr old son had a soccer game at 6pm yesterday. When we got out to the field, it was misting, wind blowing and chilly. Gradually the mist got heavier and heavier. They played the 2nd half in steady light rain, wind and cold temps. It was miserable for us parents, but the kids enjoyed the heck out of it.
