I am getting hail and heavy rain here in Irving.

The short range continue to give hints of 3+ inches of snow for the metroplex and the Red River. This storm has a lot of energy and facets involved hail, heavy rain, thunder, sleet, snow, violent tornadoes, and the extent is extraordinary. Will be a memorable Christmas storm for many.

Hail and heavy rain just passed through Garland... Looks like another wave headed this way from the WSW.

I'm starting to get a little worried about an ice factor underneath the snow. Oklahoma City has been reporting freezing drizzle and accidents. 850s are still not quite there yet but the freeze line is much further south at the surface and with wet bulb temps already able to reach that point in our western zones, can't rule out a period of freezing drizzle or rain before the switch over.

No hail here in south Garland, the storm cell missed me to my northwest. Got my yard watered for Christmas though, and a wicked lightning show. It seemed like some of the *brightest* lightning I've ever seen... it flashed like it was right next to me, but the thunder would take ten seconds or longer.... it was very, very odd. It freaked me out, and freaked my dog out (who never gets spooked by thunderstorms) too.

I wonder if it had something to do with the cold temperatures - maybe snow at the upper levels?

By the way, Gainesville is reporting snow. And northerly winds.

GAINESVILLE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT TX

Light Snow
32°F
0°C
Humidity 100%
Wind Speed N 12 mph
Barometer 29.82 in
Dewpoint 32°F (0°C)
Visibility 4.00 mi
Wind Chill 23°F (-5°C)
Last Update on 25 Dec 2:15 am CST

The NWS point forecast for Gainesville calls for a steady temperature around 39, with rain until mixing begins at noon and the full changeover at 3pm as the temp falls to about 27. The forecast for Sherman/Denison calls for a steady temperature around 41, and the current observation there is 37. My point forecast in Garland is for a steady temperature of about 47, and it's currently 42 at the Heliport. Ardmore Oklahoma is reporting 36 degrees and rain, but their forecast overnight temperature was 39. Temperatures seem to be running about five degrees below forecast -- this is BIG.

And Merry Christmas everybody! :cheesy:

Rain, thunder, and 37 here in Denison.

I've been out of pocket for several days. And I've refused to believe that such a White Christmas event would unfold here.

But I like the trends right now Mr. Crosby! :D

I'm debating staying up for the AFD or going to bed now to be awake well before the changeover. This thing is taking some really exciting trends!

DFW NWS

THE UPPER LOW CONTINUES TO ROTATE ACROSS EASTERN NEW MEXICO EARLY
THIS MORNING. THE UPPER LOW HAS BEEN TRACKING FURTHER SOUTH THAN
EARLIER RUNS INDICATED. THIS IS NOT SURPRISING BASED ON SURFACE
PRESSURE FALLS ACROSS MUCH OF WEST TEXAS. OUR CURRENT THINKING IS
THAT THE UPPER LOW WILL TRACK ROUGHLY ALONG THE INTERSTATE 20
CORRIDOR. THIS WILL RESULT IN THE SNOW LINE MOVING FURTHER SOUTH
THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT. THEREFORE...WE HAVE DECIDED TO EXPAND THE
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY ONE ROW OF COUNTIES SOUTH AND MENTION
LIGHT SNOW OR A RAIN SNOW MIX INTO ALL BUT THE SOUTHEAST COUNTIES
OF NORTH TEXAS BY THIS EVENING. THE DEEPER AND SLOWER TRACK OF THE
UPPER LOW WILL ALSO RESULT IN A LONGER DURATION OF SNOW ALONG THE
RED RIVER WITH APPRECIABLE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS LIKELY. THEREFORE...WE
HAVE UPGRADED THE ADVISORY TO A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE RED
RIVER COUNTIES. WE EXPECT A MIX OF RAIN AND SLEET TO BEGIN IN THE
NORTHWEST LATER THIS MORNING WITH A CHANGE OVER TO ALL SNOW FROM
WEST TO EAST BEGINNING AROUND MIDDAY. TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS
BETWEEN 4 AND 6 ALONG THE RED RIVER...2 TO 4 INCHES NORTH OF THE
INTERSTATE 20 CORRIDOR AND 1 TO 2 INCHES ALONG THE INTERSTATE 20
CORRIDOR...INCLUDING THE IMMEDIATE METROPLEX. ALTHOUGH SNOW
AMOUNTS OUTSIDE OF THE WINTER STORM WARNING AREA WILL BE
LIGHT...TRAVEL IMPACTS ARE VERY LIKELY IN THE ADVISORY AREA...
ESPECIALLY THIS EVENING WHEN TEMPERATURES FALL INTO THE LOWER AND
MIDDLE 20S. TO COMPLICATE MATTERS EVEN MORE...A VERY TIGHT
PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL RESULT IN WINDY CONDITIONS THIS AFTERNOON
AND EVENING WHICH WILL RESULT IN SOME BLOWING SNOW. IT DOES NOT
APPEAR THAT WE WILL REACH BLIZZARD WARNING CRITERIA WHICH IS
SUSTAINED OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF 35 MPH FOR 3 HOURS OR MORE. WE WILL
REACH WIND ADVISORY CRITERIA IN ALL COUNTIES THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING. LIGHT SNOW WILL END FROM WEST TO EAST THIS EVENING AS THE
UPPER LOW MOVES INTO THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.

Game on, folks! 1-2 inches for the metro will likely be 2-4 inch totals. Red river counties...4-8 inches? Perhaps. With lows tomorrow morning in the teens!

What a monster storm.

Looks like the latest RAP has North Texas under some moderate to heavy snowfall for at least 3-4 hours.

Yep, this could be a big surprise for a lot of folks today and a welcomed one by the youngsters! I'm not surprised though with the continued Southward trend of this storm, wouldn't be surprised to see W inter Storm Warnings later!

It's been awhile since I've posted on here since the winter that wasn't happened last year. This is the first time I've had to spend a good part of the night watching models and such for awhile. I just wanted to mention that Porta kind of called this about a month ago mentioning the changover at the end of december:) You can always depend on the PWC!

Now let the fun begin, looks like it's going to be an interesting day across North Texas. :froze:

My first white christmas that wasn't a leftover from a few days before:) I was out of town the last time DFW had a somewhat white christmas.

I don't think they will extend the Winter storm warnings, even if we do end up getting more than expected. It just wouldn't make sense for them to do it this late...they will probably stick with what they have. I remember when we had that record snowfall a few years ago and they were still only calling for 4-6 inches when most of the area was already well past the 6 inch mark.

I don't think we'll get that much snow or anything, but just using that as an example.

You're right Iorange, it was amazing how silly they were being that day. I understand being conservative, but when you already had 6 inches on the ground, go ahead and admit it, lol. They've done a decent job forecasting this though, Fort Worth is better about jumping out on the winter limb than they used to be.

Oh, for sure. I am convinced that we have one of the best groups around, they do a great job of explaining every little detail. That storm a few years ago was just so wicked that they just couldn't keep up!
