I get fired up for snowstorms as much as anyone, and I've have seen my fare share of wild early AM noreaster events (trees coming down close to the house, the eerie light blue -- like daylight -- an entire cloud-filled sky turns with lightning at 3 AM in the heart of a storm, etc). However, I can no longer ignore the price that others pay, as I've seen it first hand.

I think you got the wrong impression of my post. If you lived in the south you would understand our excitement for winter weather. I know there are risks involved with trees coming down, but you see that more during an ice storm. I'm sorry you had bad experiences, but I have too. I also had trouble in the Jan 2000 ice storm just like Jeny. I just bought a new car and a branch from a huge pine tree fell and almost totaled it! That doesn't mean that my passion for winter weather will all the sudden go away. That will never happen!

Do you mean Jan 25 or Jan 30? Up here in Virginia, Jan 25 was a 12 inch snowstorm, and Jan 30 was a massive 1.75 in. ice storm with 1 in. of snow/sleet.

I think it was Jan 30. That was definitely the worst ice storm I had seen here in a while!

Jeny,

Didn't we have another storm on the 30th too? I thought there might be more than one that year.

Yeah, we had another the following weekend, but it was the weekend of the 25th that clobbered my house and car (not to mention the twin's birthday---that was their birthday weekend).

Well that makes sense now. I confused the two dates. Sorry to hear your twins had to celebrate their birthday during that storm. I hope we don't see another ice storm like that again!

Actually, we had their 5th birthday party at a McDonalds during the day--before it started iciing. It was a cold-rainy day when we arrived at McDonalds for the party. All during the party, the weather really didn't look any different to us from inside the warm McDonald's playland--just cold and rainy.

It wasn't until it was time to load all the birthday goodies into our van, that I found the rear hatch frozen shut. That *should* have been a clue to me that something was up with the weather. But, nope. I didn't realize we had truly bad weather coming our way.

Went home, put things away, did snacks, bath and then put the kids to bed for the night. At 3am I was rudely awakened by falling trees on the house....too dark and dangerous to leave, as our house is surrounded by very tall pines. If we had left the house, we would have been at risk of being hit and killed by one of them. Sooo....we stayed put.

Shortly after I woke up...my son woke up. Poor fella. He was scared. We could hear limbs and branches snapping and falling all around us. Sounded like bombs going off. And...we had no power.

So..we sat on our couch--all bundled up in our cold, dark, dark house with our flashlight in the middle of the night. I told him he had a very important job to do for Mommy....everytime he heard something fall, pop or hit the ground or house....he was to count for me (remember this is a pre-k kid who'd just turned 5 that day, so the counting wasn't great)

1....2.....3......4......5. POP.....1......2.......3......4.......6......7......9 KABLAM

1...2......3.....4.....5....6....8.......9.......10. BOOM

We just made a game out of it. It kept us both calm and occupied...not thinking about how scary or cold it was outside. Just counting....

Looking back, I was terrified but couldn't let my son see his Mommy scared. Now that we've gotten past that sweet age, and that terrible night/morning is gone, I realize what special precious "alone" time we had. And what a gift it was to me and my son. Twins get very little time alone with their Moms....but because of this storm, he got some extra special time alone with me. I treasure this memory of time spent with my son all the more!

Jeny

PS. Twin sister didn't wake up UNTIL 9 AM!!!! She had NO clue anything was going on, and was terribly surprised by the whole thing.....

Wow! Hard to believe your daughter slept through that! I remember hearing the trees snapping outside and they were pretty loud. When I heard my car alarm go off, I knew that was trouble! As soon as I got outside to look at the car, I saw a huge branch smashed into the roof. The branch smashed the windshield and hood as well. Not something I expected to see after having the car only one month!
