GFS doing it's flip-flop cold air dance as predicted...just doesn't have a good handle on the pattern yet.

Yep, but at this point those of us and pro mets who follow patterns know it doesn't matter about the flips. We know what its going to do and what's coming, how much of it is the question. I suspect as the days grow closer we will be posting more jaw-dropping, eye-brow raising maps as the resolution on the models get better.

That's insanity. 1899 kind of stuff. If that were to verify, we'd be at zero in N-Texas. One of the bays on the coast might ice up. Lake Texoma might freeze. Wow.

Also it was in mid-January that the measurement was taken. -50s would be incredible anywhere in the states in the month of December. GFS has gone mad with the cold.

Not sure what the minimum temps were up North in Dec '89 and '83.

Roger's Pass in MT recorded -69.7 (rounded up -70F) on 1/20/54

Peter's Sink in UT recorded -69F on 2/1/85

During this time Colorado also recorded its lowest temp in Maybell, CO @ -61F on 2/1/85.

North (-34F - 1/21/85) and South Carolina(-19F - 1/21/85) and Virginia (-30F on 1/22/85).

Can anyone post the graphics for weather patterns for January and February of '85?

Some light to moderate rains across Central and NTX this morning. Rain chances lowered to 40-50% across SE TX this afternoon and night. Models continue to advertise a strong Arctic blast next weekend. This will be a Winter weather prep weekend……I feel like I am tracking a CAT 3 in the Caribbean Sea that is headed toward the NW GOM and TX Coast.

Breaking News ....

The Portastorm Weather Center in scenic southwest Travis County has scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. Sunday., to further discuss the upcoming holidays and expected weather. Despite a series of frequent questions from reporters regarding a potential Arctic Outbreak -- of much chatter has been seen online -- for the Christmas holidays, the PWC's lead meteorologist refused comment. However he did make one brief remark, smirking, as he walked away from reporters on the lawn of the PWC ... saying "think Richard III."

Despite a series of frequent questions from reporters regarding a potential Arctic Outbreak -- of much chatter has been seen online -- for the Christmas holidays, the PWC's lead meteorologist refused comment. However he did make one brief remark, smirking, as he walked away from reporters on the lawn of the PWC ... saying "think Richard III."

Storm Update from Grayson County - I'm now calling this "Winter Storm Yeti," the storm that is wildly stronger and keeps ice longer.

Today is the NINTH day I've had an inch or more of sleet COVERING my front yard. That's unreal. And I don't mean a few spots with sleet, I mean virtually the whole yard is still white with a covering of sleet.

Today is the first day that Denison and Sherman ISD schools have been to class since they let out early last Thursday afternoon when it started icing up. They missed FIVE full days due to icy roads.

There are still places with ice (it's getting slushy now since we didnt drop below freezing overnight) on side streets and parking lots. Yesterday morning, it was still so icy that I actually spun and slid into a curb on an icy street near my house and dented my tire rim slightly.

This has also been a tragic winter storm event the last couple of days locally in GC. There was a fatality semi-truck accident yesterday morning in Sherman when the driver hit an icy spot and hit a bridge on Hwy. 75. The day before, a youth here in Grayson County was paralyzed in a sledding type of accident.

Models continue to advertise a major Arctic outbreak across the U.S. next week, with the cold air arriving here in Houston by Saturday the 21st. Though I don't think the models have a great handle on just how cold it might get here, it's fun to follow the temperature forecasts for Christmas week. Take a look at the two meteograms from last night's GFS run. Note on the first plot (00Z - 6pm last evening) that I had to adjust the temperature scale to be wider than on the midnight run (06Z = 12AM today) as the GFS is forecasting dew points (green line) down to -18F. I don't think I've ever seen such dew points in Houston.

Anyway you slice it, Christmas week is looking way too cold for me. Could have a day or two with highs not topping freezing. Going to Home Depot this weekend to pick up some hose bib covers and pipe wrap and check the insulation over the pipes in the attic.
