Wow, the mother of all rain storms here in the Sherman/Denison area. Just one round of storms and heavy rain after another. And more on the way.
Radar estimates show as much 5-6" has fallen in an area of NW Grayson County. And a good 2-4" inches has fallen over most of the county in the past 12 hours.
Lake Texoma and Lake Ray Roberts will likely go from below normal to above normal in a couple of days.
Crazy La Nina winter!

58 MPH gust at a station not far from me. Starting to calm down now, looks like its the warm front coming through. Alot of winds converging near us i guess. Trash cans and trash are all over the street since tomorrow morning is trash day

Johnny Kelly@stormchaser4850: "Developing: Daily RECORD of 5.59 inches of rainfall has drenched Austin, Texas so far this morning http://bit.ly/xfPdkI"
In addition to that, there is reported damage in Austin from a possible tornado and some high water rescues going on in portions of central Texas.
Wow...

Rain has been relentless! I hydroplaned the entire way to class lol. The radar rainfall estimates for the region is something you see after a tropical system passes by not January, crazy widespread 4+ inches everywhere. Southeast Tx seems to be under the gun this morning for violent weather, stay safe folks.

From Jeff this morning...
New Severe Thunderstorm Warning for winds to 60mph has been issued until 845am for Waller, N Harris, Montgomery, Walker, San Jacinto, Trinity, Houston, Madison and Grimes Counties. Severe line of thunderstorms capable of damaging straight line winds extends from northern Austin County to Madison County. Radar shows strong westerly winds of 55-60mph along the leading edge of this line moving eastward at 45mph. Damaging winds are likely in the warning area as these storms move quickly across this region. Winds of this magnitude will down trees and power lines and may damage roofs and windows. Extensive amount of trees in this area killed by the ongoing drought may fall in the strong winds. Southward on the line, watching a developing large cell over Colorado County where radar is suggesting low level rotation may be increasing west of Columbus and south of I-10. This cell is in a favorable position to feed off of untapped low level inflow off the Gulf of Mexico with a lack of large severe cells southward over Wharton and Matagorda counties currently. Just in CRP sounding at 600am showed 0-1km shearing values of 400-500 m^2/s^2 so the greatest tornado threat remains with cells developing ahead of the main line and embedded supercells within the main line. Suspect northern edge of the line will bow outward and weaken with time while southern section south of I-10 intensifies as it moves eastward into Jackson, Wharton, and Colorado counties.

Rain started here in Little Elm, TX about 5pm last night. As of 7am this morning, 3.9 inches of glorious rain had filled my CoCoRaHS rain guage, with more to come.

It's already up almost a foot. We may be looking at a 4'+ rise here.

I don't know if these totals are a bit inflated or not, but NWS radar estimate (Fort Worth) is showing widespread 5-8" totals in Cooke and Grayson counties.
----
EDIT: Lake Texoma has shot up nearly a foot in a little over 24-hours. That's very impressive for such a big lake. Got a feeling it will go several feet above normal when all is said and done.

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
The Portastorm Weather Center earlier today (2-6 am) experienced one of the more severe thunderstorms we've seen in several years in southwest Austin/Travis County. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential rainfall at times, and gusty winds. We received about 3 1/2 inches of rain since midnight. It truly was one of those awe-inspiring events where you sit back and watch and think "wow ... Mother Nature is pissed!"
To all of those experiencing the storms now and to those who will ... be safe. This system means business!

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
The 1/25 0z European teleconnection index forecast is interesting. It show a -NAO, -AO, and positive PNA in the longer term. Prior runs had only shown a negative NAO and negative AO, with a negative PNA. The change to a positive PNA means that a west coast ridge may set up, with a trough across the eastern 1/2 of the CONUS. This, of course, is dependent on whether the model forecast verifies.
The only negative I see is that the European is forecasting a postive EPO. However, even the positive EPO is trending towards neutral and perhaps negative beyond 10 days. My gut, along with these index forecasts, leads me to believe that the time period to look at for possible wintry weather is February 7-25. Keep hope alive.

Ok, I'll go ahead and say it...
"Can you imagine what it would be like if we had cold air involved with this system and all of this moisture?!? A snowstorm for the ages!"
