if you extend that freezing line east, it appears to hit the I-35 corridor between West and Hillsboro. Points north look to be in the freezing precip category. please cool rapidly in Waco, we're soooo close.

Radar returns indicate that there is probably a lot of sleet in the Austin area. In a warmer regime I would expect it to be heaby rain. I find the reeturns S of SA interesting int that it does indicate we will probably be getting a good dose of rain here in SE TX since it is too warm for frozen precip.

Yes ... there are now a number of reports of sleet falling in the northern, western, and southwestern parts of town. Of course, with the ever-present Omega Block over my head, it is nothing but a cold rain here in downtown Austin by the Capitol.

HGX Update...
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
1004 AM CST TUE DEC 29 2009
.DISCUSSION...
INITIAL SWATH OF PRECIP NOTED ON RADAR OVER SOUTH CENTRAL TX WILL
SPREAD ACROSS SE TX IN THE NEXT 4 HOURS. SOME BRIGHTER ECHOES
NOTED IN THE RAIN AREA OVER SAN ANTONIO/AUSTIN AND POINTS
WESTWARD. GIVEN THE INTENSITY OF THIS AREA OF PRECIP...THERE ARE
SEVERAL REPORTS ON NWSCHAT OF SLEET OR LIGHT SNOW MIXING IN WITH
THE RAIN AS FAR EAST AS SAN ANTONIO AND AUSTIN. STILL SEE
POTENTIAL FOR A LIGHT WINTRY MIX AT THE ONSET OF THE PRECIP OVER
THE NORTHWEST THIRD OF THE AREA. NO ICE OR SNOW ACCUMULATION WILL
OCCUR AND NO ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED. THE LOW LEVELS WILL STEADILY
WARM THROUGH THE AFTN SO THE PRECIP SHOULD CHANGE TO ALL RAIN BY
LATE AFTN. TEMPS WILL DROP A FEW DEGREES ONCE PRECIP STARTS DUE TO
EVAPORATIVE COOLING...SETTING INTO THE MID/UPPER 30S NORTHWEST...LOW
TO MID 40S ELSEWHERE. EXPECT STEADY OR SLOWLY RISING TEMPS THROUGH
THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. WILL PROBABLY SEE A BREAK IN THE PRECIP THIS
EVENING...THEN HEAVIEST RAIN WILL OCCUR LATE TONIGHT/WED MORNING
OVER THE SE HALF WITH THE SECOND ROUND AS BEST JET DYNAMICS IMPACT
AREA.

Yes, we had two names for it. That one and the High Pressure Ridge of Death! Thank God we have transitioned out of that ugly period, eh?!

No Comments about the 12z GFS?
If that baby verifies,
for the whole nation west of the Rockies and we'd have a January to remember.

I'm thinking we may have some decent rain first for awhile when this hits DFW/north Dallas. Its 39 now at Addison airport with temps supposedly dropping to 33 this afternoon, dewpoint is 32.
Noob question here - does the entire system cool as it moves N/E into slightly colder temps? Or is the cooling effect moreso because of the precipitation falling from the upper atmosphere?

I think it is colder up above our heads. As the rain\precip falls it drags down the colder air as well as evaporative cooling if there is dry air in place.

Abilene, Baird, Brownwood, Comanche all reporting snow.

Rain rapidly turning to sleet from New Branfels to northwest Austin...
Colder air mass devolping along the precip sheild from Weatherford to Benbrook, to Hillsboro...

I think most of us are too engrossed in today's event, CC, which is already containing some surprises. That being said, I'm sure we'll dialogue more later today on that run. Fun, fun, fun!
