All this '93 superstorm analog talk certainly got me up and running this morning. Keep it coming :ggreen:

However, I hope the blowtorch comes during March. I'm ready for the beach.

I'd highly doubt that the BP oil spill killed the loop current and the North Atlantic Current. That video was from early December, by the way. As I look at the Loop Current today, it's certainly there, though on the weak side. But I'd say that the weaker Loop Current was more the result of a quite negative NAO from last summer through now. Much weaker than normal easterly trades mean weaker ocean currents through the Caribbean and into the Gulf. It's these currents that help to determine the strength of the Loop Current.

The Atlantic Thermohaline circulation is not related to the Loop Current or North Atlantic current. By that, I mean it's a different current completely. It's stronger than ever.

I wouldnt necessarily call the weather so far this year weird. Abnormal, yes, but the earths atmosphere is always changing. It is possible that we are in a period where the negative PDO can be affecting the climate all over the world though. Add on the fact the media storm almost any event around the world causes, it makes things seem 'weird' nowadays

Sure, the atmosphere is most definitely affected by the ocean below. Changing the pattern of warm/cold across the oceans will have an impact on our weather. But "weird things" happen every year. Climate is just an average of extremes. One thing I do know is that we should be much more fearful of global cooling than global warming, regardless of the cause.

alright, we're back on track!!! Did the '93 superstorm setup have any effect on Texas, besides being a staging ground for mother load of all winter storms?

Not really...

I was in Birmingham, AL at the time so I was in the thick of it. IIRC, back home in Texas, the Dallas area got a light dusting of snow and some cold out of it, but nothing at all like it was for the SE & Eastern Seaboard. The storm didn't really wrap-up until a low formed in the Gulf. I remember James Spann (one of the great ones) telling us all to be on the alert for "explosive cyclogenesis" in the Gulf and boy did it ever happen.

A week later I drove home to Texas on I-20 and past about Meridian, MS, all signs of damage (downed trees, etc.) started to completely disappear.

Yeah '93 storm had a minimal effect on us. I remember a low of 25 degrees in houston though which isnt too shabby for mid to late march.

(I deleted my post. Apparently Raleigh was on the eastern edge and didn't get nearly as much as points just to the west)

The 12z GFS runs show not one ... but TWO winter storms for much of Texas over the next two weeks!

Wouldn't that be nice?!

^ Well another day, yet another set of solutions from the GFSuckers model! I've given up trying to figure out these shortwaves. Guess we'll know when they arrive! I don't think I can recall so much cold around the globe. Usually when it's cold in Canada, Siberia is 'less cold' vice versa.
