Don't believe it!!! It will take it away shortly!@# He who giveth, takeths!
It's so funny how these runs bundle together. Canadian is interesting too. I wonder what causes these lemming reactions? And the Euro seems to flop with as well.

Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
It looks like the GFS is targeting the beginning of February for some winter business. Found this in this morning's Austin/San Antonio forecast discussion.
COLDER AIR COULD SPILL ACROSS THE REGION FROM THE NORTH...ASSOCIATED WITH A MORE CONTINENTAL TYPE OF POLAR AIR MASS...IN WAKE OF A 700 TO 300 HPA TROF THAT PASSES EAST OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS. THIS COLDER AIR COULD GET OVERRUN BY MOISTURE JAN 29 AND 30...SETTING UP A PATTERN OF MORE CLOUDS THAT WEEKEND.
Any connection between the two?

Is the GFS planning to add the preface "When Pigs Fly" to these long-range solutions?

The telecommunications between a +PNA/-EPO and a tanking AO as well as a return to a -NAO near the first of February gives validity to such a scenario.
Interesting days ahead, folks.

If the nws in Austin is even mentioning this at this point they must think it has some possibility because they are usually slow to jump on any "bandwagon".

We are waiting on a reply from the Portastorm Weather Center. Vigilant as ever, these brave young men and women are busy going over the models to give you the most accurate forecast ever (Porta to his young minions...."Somebody, please plug the whatchamacallit into the whirlagig")

Re: Texas Winter 2010-2011
Moments ago, S2K News caught up with the Portastorm Weather Center director and asked him about the 12z GFS run and its snowmageddon depiction for much of Texas.
"We're confident in that run because it was computed with the assistance of srainhoutx and Southerngale. They know their weather stuff!" The director continued that "we urge Texans from Dallas down to San Antonio and over east to Houston to stock up on supplies and get out to your local hardware store for snow shovels."
More details as they become available.

I'm not running. I'm already cold, but I'll play in the snow until I freeze to death.

I'm debating trying to figure out where to buy a snow shovel locally.

I just figure that since I'd have to order one, it probably won't be a good idea to wait until the forecast verifies because if I did that, I wouldn't receive it in time. I would say that such a forecast is not likely, but theoretically possible, but won't be verifiable until no greater than about 60 hours away, which would occur Jan 26-28 at the earliest. Sorry for the retarded run-on sentence.

Actually, as Bastardi was pointing out in his Long Ranger the past few days, the big 1993 storm occurred with a sharply +AO and NAO. There was a huge upper low over Greenland and a trof that extended all the way across the pole, through Greenland to the western Caribbean - much like the models are predicting for about 10 days out. That storm dropped south out of western Canada, it didn't originate in the southern stream.
Sort of exciting to see the long-range models picking up on possible extreme cold or extreme snow. However, it would be more exciting if they could see a heat wave...
