Guys, what you all should fear is the power outages. I know in some cases you lose power for up to a week.

Ivan, I know they cancelled classes and all related events at Auburn University for tomorrow regarding the BCS national championship game. I am wodering with the major icing situation through tomorrow there, the other major concern will be the power outages throughout the region. My goodness, unless you have a generator, a kot of people there may be a risk of noit even seeing the game tomorrow night.

Yes that is a big concern I have too. I don't care much for Auburn... :P but I know a lot of people do.

folks in the heavy icing zone should do whatever they can to be ready for a potentially protracted power outage. the game will quickly become an after thought if you're freezing in a home without power. if you lack a generator or a fireplace with ample wood, find someone who does and become friends...fast. despite my current fl location, i am a native northerner with plenty of severe winter weather experience (hence my latitude adjustment). in 1990 we had a severe ice storm that wiped out our power. thank goodness i had played lumber jack the summer before. the wood burning fireplace saved our butts.

Back to the west is not encouraging for the snow fans... icy mess already in Mississippi and the main show is not here yet.

AT 1045 AM CST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATED A BAND OF
SLEET...FREEZING RAIN...AND SNOW...EXTENDING FROM NEAR BASTROP
LOUISIANA AND CROSSETT ARKANSAS...THROUGH CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI
INCLUDING THE AREAS FROM LEXINGTON DOWN TO NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE
JACKSON METRO AREA...TO NEAR MERIDIAN. THIS BAND WAS LIFTING SLOWLY
NORTH.

ROAD CONDITIONS ARE REPORTED AS HAZARDOUS FROM THE JACKSON METRO AREA
WEST AND NORTHWEST INTO THE ARKLAMISS DELTA. NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS HAVE
BEEN REPORTED...AND IN VICKSBURG STREETS WERE REPORTED AS BEING ICY
ALONG WITH BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES BEING HAZARDOUS. RECENT REPORTS
INDICATE DETERIORATING ROAD CONDITIONS IN WASHINGTON COUNTY JUST
SOUTH OF GREENVILLE. ICY ROADS HAVE ALSO BEEN REPORTED OVER PARTS OF

THE INTERSTATE 20 CORRIDOR WILL SEE A BREAK IN THE WINTRY

OVER SOUTH MISSISSIPPI...TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY ABOVE FREEZING
AND ANY PRECIPITATION IS VERY LIGHT. GUSTY EAST WINDS CAN BE EXPECTED
TODAY...AND THIS COULD CAUSE A FEW DOWNED LIMBS AND TREES. WINTRY
PRECIPITATION WILL BECOME A CONCERN AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON.

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -– Gov. Bob Riley on Sunday declared a state of emergency, activating state resources to prepare and cope with a rare winter storm that could bring snow and ice to much of the state.

“We face a serious storm that will have an impact all across Alabama," Riley said in a statement this morning. "With the accumulations of ice that are projected to begin tonight, motorists should stay off roads during these conditions. State agencies have been preparing for this dangerous weather and have already called up extra manpower and equipment. However, the most important thing right now is for citizens to be constantly aware of the hazards and to make sure they themselves are prepared. I urge all Alabamians to heed the weather reports and to make sure their families and friends do the same,” said Governor Riley.

Looks like this storm might be wetter than earlier predictions. Our mets are now saying 4-6 in the Charlotte metro area.

Just for fun, take a look at the 12z GFS. It looks like we are locked into this stormy cold pattern at least throughout January. Going to be a long month for the deep south imo.

Ice Storm Threat is Increasing
Bill Murray | 12:40 pm January 9, 2011 | Comments (0)

Warmer air aloft is a great concern for us here in Central Alabama as it increases the possibility of a dangerous ice storm.

Already seeing reports of iced bridges in Sumter County Alabama and numerous accidents in Meridian. Conditions will continue to deteriorate over West Central Alabama this afternoon, spreading northeast with time. The precipitation could reach the Birmingham area as early as mid-afternoon.

The sleet and freezing rain could transition over to snow for a few hours this evening as evaporative cooling occurs, but it very well could switch back to all freezing rain later tonight in the I-20 corridor, creating a potentially disastrous ice storm situation. Please take a moment to assess your readiness for an extended power outages that could occur.

Is that image still to be believed with all of the ice/sleet changes we've been hearing about by the local ATL mets?

Cheers and looking forward to snow vs. ice!

I think I am just going to stay put. It would be dumb and try to travel back to Pensacola tonight. Never been in an ice storm, but I know up to a half inch is dangerous. I am hoping for a miracle and it will mostly be snow, unfortunately, this looks like an extremely dangerous ice storm.

Ivan, I have a feeling you would really enjoy and ice storm. They were my favorite growing up and I haven't been one in ages. Something to behold. Just don't drive...and don't stand under pine trees!

Yeah... it's gotta be overdone. I wish it were right, but I'll be very surprised if there's much measurable snow below I-85. Looks like major ice to me.

There is a window for snow to accumulate though this evening before midnight before it changes over.
