Good morning weather people. Still quite foggy around the Metroplex this morning. Drivng up Hwy. 360 this morning you could not see more than 30 feet in front of you in some spots. Hoping to hear some thunder later today.

An accident occurred on I-30 over Lake Ray Hubbard before dawn and resulted in both sides being shutdown; still. I know the weather had to play a part in it. All traffic is being detoured through Rockwall and the traffic is the worst I've ever seen. Good thing I have the flexibility to work from home, or it'd take a good 2 hours to get to Richardson.

Yep. For now, wxman57 is in complete control.

In terms of teleconnection indices, they look grim as well. EPO/WPO both progged to be positive which is bad. PNA is positive too which can be good but it all depends on the location of the West Coast ridge. The GFS and CMC have that ridge far enough into the CONUS that it blocks any cold, polar flow into Texas. AO is progged to go slightly negative by mid month (which can be good) but then go back to neutral or even positive.

I keep hoping I'm going to wake up one of these mornings and see the operational models showing some massive winter storm in the Southern Plains in 10 days and the teleconnections going bonkers for a cold, stormy pattern. But that's all it is right now ... hope.

A friend of mine took 2.5 hours to get from Wyndemere in Heath to Lake Pointe Hospital in Rowlett.

Ah, quite a pleasant morning across southeast Texas. I was able to drive to work without my coat on for a change. Should be sunny with a high near 70 Saturday/Sunday once the weak front moves through early tomorrow morning. In fact, 60s or 70s for the high most of next week, though we'll have to tolerate lows in the 40s or possibly the upper 30s by Friday. Nothing remotely close to "blowtorch" conditions, more like barely tolerable coolness.

Was just looking at the ECMWF 00Z Ensembles and they show quite a mild pattern developing across the U.S. beyond 10 days. An interesting upper low cuts across the Red River on the 21st, but it appears to lack any Canadian/Arctic air to work with (552dm central height and 850mb temps well up into the 40s to near 50F). Could produce a line of thunderstorms, though.

February is climatologically the snowiest month in Houston, as you can see in the link below. Generally the greatest chances are in the 2nd or 3rd week of February. No snow here this January, however.

20 inches of snow in 1895 for Houston?? That is so anomalous. The city has never received over 5 inches any other time but on that date it got 20?! Why can't that happen in my lifetime and where I live?

Was just looking at Austin's records from nws and see our largest snowfall was just under 10 inches. Also noted that for more than just a trace we are now going on over 5 years. Last was in 2008. Noticied the longest period without measurable snow was 11 yrs from 1985 to 1996. Does that mean we have to wait another 6 years? Sorry, couldn't resist the sarcasm.

Houston hasn't had more than 2 inches of snow since the 1970s. They are long overdue for a major event. I consider more than 3 inches a major event along the Gulf. haha

This is exactly how I feel. I dislike cold and dry weather. If I knew it was going to be dry, I would prefer a temperature of around 52 degrees.

Euro ensembles are in - no freeze in Houston through the 19th. Down to 35F on the 16th and 18th, though. Mid 40s to low 50s on the morning of the 19th for the Houston Marathon.

Besides about 36 hours of below normal temperatures this past week from the "polar vortex," (saw lows around 50F one night) we have generally seen lows in the low 70s and highs in the low to mid 80s this whole fall and winter so far...don't want to make you too jealous over there in Texas!

Perfect running weather is anywhere between 45 and 65 degrees. I wish we could create a Weather machine that would not allow temps over 65 in Winter.

They can go as low as they climatologically can.

Besides about 36 hours of below normal temperatures this past week from the "polar vortex," (saw lows around 50F one night) we have generally seen lows in the low 70s and highs in the low to mid 80s this whole fall and winter so far...don't want to make you too jealous over there in Texas!

That's why I love Florida, besides having real sandy beaches (vs. Galveston). Will be heading over there for the National Hurricane Conference in April (Orlando).
