Well didn't think it would happen again today , but it did. A pretty good temperature bust. So far the high at my house has only made it to 31 , now back to 30. The forecast was for a 90% chance of RAIN with highs in the upper 30's. Had very light patchy freezing rain this morning and thats it. What happened to all this rain we were supposed to be getting? I guess its good we didn't because we would have had 6-8 hrs of freezing rain if that part of the had verified. Wonder what will happen tonight IF the rains do materialize and drop the temps a couple of more unexpected degrees? BTW our low tonight is forecast to be 33, but like I said the high was supposed to be 37. Once and if the rains comes is it supposed to warm up or were they only thinking temps would drop a few degress overnight because of clouds and rain? Guess I am trying to figure out if we are already below freezing now will we get a few degrees colder once it gets to the nighttime hours and have the potential to get much more freezing rain than currently forecast?

I've been wondering the same thing Mike. I haven't gotten above 30 here at my house today, but the frozen sheets of water on top of my garbage can have melted a little (not sure why???). My predicted low for tonight is 32 but the temperature would have to rise to get there, LOL. I'm ready for the low to get cranked up and see what we actually end up with.

I have definitely experienced where the rain comes in and, for whatever reason, temps rise 3-4 degrees. Maybe a pro can explain this but it has happened in cold rain events many times before. However, not sure if it will this time. Weather.com has already adjusted the freezing rain to last longer into tonight so maybe they are realizing our temps aren't quite getting to where they thought they would. The snow pack probably has thrown all the models off a degree or two. It is a good thing we've only had a little rain, this could have been seriously bad. It still can be, let's see what tonight brings.

Still trying to learn.....Weatherbug shows my near by temp at 31 and the dew point has come up to 29 (from 24 earlier today). Doesn't that mean that the atmosphere is moistening? And maybe that the real precip will be starting soon???

the reason the temp can rise at night is warm air being pulled from the gulf along with the moisture and rain.
Low pressure pulls warm air north along with precip from the gulf in the se quadrant of the low and cold air south on the backside nw quad. Just depends on your orientation in reference to the afformentioned low pressure. Every situation is different.

If we stay below freezing the entire duration then I see us getting more than "under .1 inch of ice" as NWS is forecasting. Unless they think we aren't going to be getting near the precip as expected yesterday? I haven't had a good look at models today.

Weather.com lists Baton Rouge as having a snow shower? Really...not in my backyard. LOL! I did step outside and I saw 2 or 3 sleet pellets or rain drops fall but they are really few and far between. Hope we get more later!

Freezing rain and 31 degrees here in west central Alabama. Icicles forming on edge of roof.

Our children and grandchildren are in Shelby County (south Birmingham) and have all made it home except our daughter-in-law, who is caught in heavy traffic on 280, driving home from her school (she teaches).

Our 18 year old granddaughter drove home down I-65 in the icy rain! Scary thought!

I went and dumped some water on my trampoline. I'm going to get some ice out of this one way or another.

Doh, and I go check on it and it has started to sprinkle. My timing is wonderful, haha

Plenty of ice at my house. Trees limbs are beginning to bend with the weight of the ice. I expect to hear them break before much longer. Rain still falling and freezing on contact. Lots more icicles on my house this time compared to our last bout of ice (a few weeks ago).
NWS extended the winter storm warning till 3 AM. Then they expect us to warm above freezing...but they said we'd get above freezing today and haven't...so we'll see. IF we don't get above freezing, this could become UGLY tonight!

It seems that areas further north into central MS, AL and even GA are getting a lot more precip than I thought they would. Is a L still supposed to form in the Gulf or is this all we're getting?

Wow, that is a big bust! We bust but in the other direction. High never broke freezing, 32 for the high. I don't remember the last time we stayed below freezing all day, even last year during a really cold outbreak with lows in the teens, we got to 34 or so during the day. This might be the first time we have stayed at or below freezing in the 10 years I have lived here.

Local tv stations reporting that Cullman County has several inches of snow. Virga here in Madison County, but according to NWS we may get up to 1/4 inch sleet; 1/19 inch of ice!

i'm sitting right in the sweet spot.. in the band passing over cullman county as well.. storm moved in quicker than thought.. held high temp down today and allowed evap cooling to do the rest.. instead of 34 and rain/snow mix.. its 30 and snow. i knew when i saw the temp 34 today and dewpoint 21 we were in for a surprise snow

Local met thinks we will still see ,25"-.50" of ice by tomorrow morning, mainly starting by 9pm but especially midnight-7am. The models tend to agree with that as well so we'll see. Have a decent glaze on a metal table outside and saw quite bit of icicles on street lights and signs on the way home. Temperatures don't look to be a problem as we are officially 31 and various reports of 30 around the city including at home. WIndchill is 20 and it feels every bit of it!
