Baton Rouge and much of the Gulf South have had two very pronounced winters in a row with several days into weeks of consistently lows in the 20's and 30's. Usually there are warm spikes inbetween the cold spells. Both years have caused the crawfish season to slow as well. Too, both winters have had below normal severe weather outbreaks. These cold winters though have allowed a very good azalea blooming season.

Looks like longrange ensembles want to replace ridge over the east with a decent trough.

Perhaps some lows in the 40's again here in the south, for winter's last hurrah?

Re: Deep South Winterwx thread: Mid February Warm-Up
Now, I am not saying this is going to happen at all, but on these dates March 22 and 23, 1968 here in Baton Rouge and other parts of the Gulf South we had two days of snow and rain, with temps that stayed in the mid 30's. I can remember my teacher trying to catch snowflakes on black construction paper, probably not knowing that at these temps you would not see hexagonal crystals.
So with temps in the 80's today here, try to think of two days of temps in the mid 30's with flakes in the air.

Yeah, I am looking forward to it. It will be interesting to see if we get another -NAO phase pattern like we did in December of last year in the Eastern CONUS and Deep South. We had record cold then and it remains to be seen in this La Nina if this may happen again this season.

You made a thread for the deep south, but this thread is for that region and is used every winter without limits as is not for a specific year like other threads that have those and that is why I merged your thread and northjaxpro reply with this big thread. In other words, keep it going here to discuss all deep south winter weather, right Michael (Ivanhater?)

Yep Luis, as many of us from the Deep South can tell ya, a lot of memories in the thread. A few Snow storms including one that even snowed in Mobile and just north of Pensacola....hopefully found memories in this thread this year!

The pattern this fall has been below normal here in Tampa Bay, with chilly weather warming up quickly to somewhat normal...but dry. TSSean, I am sure, pulled the latest cold front through (as coastal storms have been known to). So, it looks like up and down weather as winter approaches. This morning is easily the coldest of the fall. I am close to the coast, but it is 51F out with a dewpoint at 34F and winds gusting to 25mph which is COLD! Frost warnings to the NE of me tonight (well away from the water) with a chilly 46F in my yard anticipated. My orchids will be thrilled as this chill leads to some really nice blossoms. However, rainfall would be nice!

I might be wrong, but though it has been slightly cooler than average for most of the FL Peninsula so far this fall I do not think it will be anywhere close to a repeat of last December's record breaking cold temps for us.
Both the NAO & AO have been in the positive value since September with no big signs by the GFS ensembles of going negative for any long period of time for the rest of this month.
Last November both the NAO & AO were already in negative phases, setting the stage for the Arctic to unload its airmass towards FL.
So finally this winter might be just a typical La Nina winter for the deep south unlike last year if the NAO stays near neutral to positive, hopefully I am not speaking too soon, lol.
So expect this quick chill downs like we are experiencing these couple of days to a couple of days later be back to near 80 deg wx for a longer period of time than not.
