Re: Texas Winter 2016-2017
Bits and pieces here and there but between what I have read on this forum and what I am seeing elsewhere from long-range forecasters nationally ... it does appear like winter may return for us the second week of February. Even wxman57 cherry-picking ensembles will not deter my hopes for one or two winter weather events for all of us in a few weeks!

Another temp bust. I might lose some plants tonight...didn't cover them because this wasn't supposed to happen...

Same here, mid 20s. Classic radiational cooling with a min of 21 and max of 41 across East Texas according to WUnderground. Forecasting was for low to mid 30s

Quick comment about the models ... both the GFS and Euro look dramatically different as compared to 24 hours ago. They are:
1. On to something
2. On something
3. Struggling with a pattern change
4. Been commandeered by wxman57

Yep, not a good trend....negative EPO vanishes, SSW appears to have little affect on the AO. If the GOA trough shows up in the long range like numerous models are depicting now, say adios to winter in the southern plains!!

I think you found the reason. South Texas Storms and I were just looking at the extended range 850mb temperature anomaly. He doesn't want to believe it, but he acknowledges that the projected upper-air pattern isn't too supportive of a major cold outbreak and/or winter weather across Texas. Enjoy your slightly below-normal temps over the next few days and late next week. I'm taking over beyond then.

Can't squeeze blood out of a turnip, and you can't get cold air to build in western Canada if the 500mb trof won't leave Alaska. Ridge just can't take hold off the west U.S. coast.

Wasn't it just yesterday that everyone was talking about how great it looked for a good February cool down?

Ugly! And as would be expected, lower heights in the poleward exit region... Not a good trend for Texas. Maybe March will save our winter! Lol

There's nothing to figure out, you just need to know who's in control. Was just talking to my cold-mongering buddy and South Texas Storms about the pattern. He's ready to concede that winter is over for Texas. I'm not letting my guard down, though. After all, winter isn't even half over yet. We did have that one major pattern change earlier this month that brought some very cold air down here.

Wow I woke up to a surprise, originally there wasn't supposed to be anything happening last night but I woke up to grass covered in white. First snow in 3 weeks, it's been way too long.

Why do Upper level systems, highs or lows, typically retrograde? Looks as if what models see what will happen to the block near Alaska
