Yeah, that is always pretty much the case with these systems traversing the Deep South in the winter bella_may. Just have to keep monitoring the trends with the models the next couple of days. There is so much very cold air that has been bottled up in Western Canada and Alaska since November. We have been in a holding pattern for about a month now waiting for the a significant pattern change to dislodge some of that cold air to come south into the U.S. Let's see how the next 10 days unfold as we approach Christmas to see if we will get some cold air in the Deep South to help me get into the holiday mood.bella_may wrote:But the question is, will it be cold enough and how far south will it get?

Should have been here 2 years ago. We had 3 storms come thru. That was a good winter.

Y'all can keep all that cold north of the Tampa Bay area. I don't need cold to be in the holiday mood! In fact, last Xmas was 85F and downright hot here with lots of sun, and it was rather enjoyable. My yard, which received its first rains in two months (and not all that much) would like it to stay north, too.

ABSOLUTELY. Kenny said it well. I'm off for two weeks beginning the 21st (I teach high school) and nothing would do me better than two weeks of warm weather with no cold fronts!

Noooo!!!! It is December, it's supposed to be cold... or at least cool. Not hot... It's almost Christmas and we've barely had any cold weather so far. "Sigh"

Yeah, the system just after Christmas looks to be very interesting across the Deep South. The dynamics look to be impressive with this system. There is a possibility we may see a good 1-2 punch with severe thunderstorms in the warm sector and wintry fun on the back side of the system during 12/27.
A lot will depend as always on the precise track of the system. But, it appears this system will finally tap into some of that cold air that has been bottled up in Canada and pull it down southward next week. A potent upper air disturbance will also move across the portions of the Deep South next week and bring a possible threat of snow. The model runs in the next couple of days will narrow down the details for sure, but at least we have some intriguing weather to look forward to in the coming days across the region for sure.

Regardless of what happens with the post Christmas storm, we're in for a huge artic outbreak after new years! Snow chances look more than promising, and I'm not just saying that to be optimistic.

From NWS Mobile:
tatement as of 9:48 AM CST on December 23, 2012
... Severe storms possible on Christmas day...
A powerful low pressure system is expected to move across northern
Mississippi and Alabama on Christmas day... bringing a strong cold
front across the area. Unseasonably warm... moist and unstable air
will surge off the Gulf of Mexico and across the deep south ahead of
the front. Your forecasters at the local National Weather Service
office in Mobile see a substantial severe weather threat being
possible across southeast Mississippi... southwest Alabama and the
western-most areas of the Florida Panhandle on Christmas day.
The latest forecast data continues to suggest scattered strong to
severe thunderstorms will develop across the area through the
morning and afternoon hours on Christmas. There is the potential that
these scattered thunderstorms during the day could produce
tornadoes... some of them possibly strong. In addition... large hail
with these storms will be possible.
By late afternoon... a line of thunderstorms will likely form to the west
along the Interstate 59 corridor in Mississippi. That squall line of
thunderstorms will quickly move eastward to be located along the Interstate
65 corridor by early evening... then east of a Brantley/Luverne to
Destin line by late evening. The primary severe weather threat along
the squall line will be damaging straight line winds... large hail and
isolated tornadoes. The threat of severe weather is expected to end
Christmas night as the strong cold front moves through the area.
Stay tuned for further updates on this potentially dangerous weather
situation.

Hope everyone stays safe during this severe weather outbreak! This is not a typical afternoon thunderstorm! Weather Channel is forecasting a Tor:Con of 6 for much of south Mississippi and south Alabama and a 5 for many surrounding areas!

You guys stay safe on Christmas in the south, hoping we can get the cold air to swiftly pass through and scour away all the bad weather as soon as possible

I'm surprised no one is talking about a possible snow event after new years!
