Re: Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)
Here are some morning meteograms to compare to yesterday. Just the GFS for now. Seems that the GFS is 2-3 deg colder for SPS and DFW than the very warm runs yesterday. That looks about right. The temps were falling a little faster than yesterday's runs predicted.
Wichita Falls first. GFS had the temp down to 39 at 9am this morning but it's already down to 38 at 7am. So temps there may be a few deg colder than the GFS predicted. Could make a difference, as the current GFS predicts only about 0.1" precip falling after the temp drops to 32F or below vs. about 0.3" in the sub-freezing air if the temp is 2-3 deg colder than the GFS is forecasting:

As for D-FW, still running a steady 55F as predicted, but the cold front is not very far north of the Metroplex. GFS could easily bust there by 10-15 degrees for this afternoon and temps could fall into the mid to upper 30s vs. mid 50s. It's going to be close:

Big temperature busts already behind the front moving across the red river counties. Already 38 in Gainesville, TX. This happens time after time with these fronts. They have to fix these point and click forecasts.

So is the Low moving more south or still staying more north?

You're welcome. If anyone here would like a copy of the spreadsheet I could post a link. It does take just a little Excel knowledge to update it. Takes about 1-2 minutes to make a meteogram for any city using the spreadsheet.

Yeah ... we're looking at a line of storms about 90 miles west of town right now (8:45 am). Gonna be a long day!

Lol....
And Hockey, It looks like its going right through the middle no further north or south! But one thing is for sure. The cold front ! It means buisness, the temp is down to 37 and light rain In Muenster Gainesville Tx, the front is moving quicker, and therefore colder air mass will be in place longer and earlier than exepcted, so forecast changes willl definitely be necessary...

I'm expecting the NWS FTW to extend the Winter Weather Advisory for FRZ rain to include Tarrant, Dallas, and Denton Co for this evening through Friday morning. This could cause major problems across the DFW area by rush hr friday morning. With the cold front already just to our north, it should be into the DFW area around noon with temps dropping into the lower 40's and upper 30's, and temps could drop to 32 or below by late evening rather than over night.

Gainesville was supposed to reach 48 today, unless that has already happened that cold front seems to be moving on in. Not much to slow it down between there and Denton. Why am I am getting a feeling that we might be in for a surprise later on today through tonight........

I agree completely, system has been a PITA with forecasting the FRZ precip, but now I have that feeling that a larger part of NTX will see the FRZ rain, due to the more ESE track of this upper low.

Do you have a site you view for WX Bug or are you using the program? I am trying to find a good website that has real time temps and wind directions. Anyone have anything they could share?

being a life-long weather nut and an engineer, I'd love the spreadsheet!
Since us in SELA have no possible winter weather to think about, it's nice to read this site and live vicariously through other people's fun!
I have family in grapevine....I often give them heads=up based on this site before their forecast says so...they are always surprised!

I suggest Wunderground's Personal Weather Station interactive maps. You can pan around and see temps and wind direction/speed from the base map.....not official calibrated temps, but a good in dicator of fronts, temp drops, etc....

Re: Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)
It's frustrating how OKC gets 10-15 degrees colder than DFW during these events. Austin is the same distance south but the temp. difference is much less pronounced. It's like the really cold air hangs up in the arbuckles.
