If that doesn't change to sleet soon, you guys may be in for some hefty ZR accretion. That's what the guidance was showing, heavier qpf than anything out west saw earlier to really rack it up.

Don’t I know it. I feel positive that the combination of advection, erosion of the warm nose by heavy precip and the possibility the heavy returns are indicating sleet. At least that’s me trying to rationalize.

I might be close then!

Yea everything except the road is covered in ice, I expect it will be a skating rink in the next hour or so.

Unfortunately there isn't much warming going on at the surface even where heavy rain is falling. Either holds steady or falls slowly. CAA is still onging as evident with the winds elevated out of the north.

DFW airport/Love field are both now 32F. FTW is 31 and just about everyone north of I-30 is at or near freezing.

Weve had a constant moderate rain for what seems like an hour now in Arlington. If only it were cold enough for snow the grass would be covered by now.

Several live reports from OKC on TWC. Snowing at a pretty good clip up there. Beautiful.

Just pointed my laser thermometer at a bunch of stuff. A lot of surfaces read 30 or below.

Air temp is 32 using the DFW Mesonet, a few lower on Wunderground. This is much faster than what models showed yesterday.

One of the best ways I’ve found to track frozen precip in these situations is to just look at the Google Traffic Map….you can currently see the slow down on roadways creeping down from Bowie towards Decatur on hwy 287

I see DFW just hit 32F with moderate rain. It's really hard for models to predict when the rain will change to sleet or snow. We have very limited sounding data across the country these days, so the models attempt to get the vertical profile correct. A degree off here or there can make all the difference. Still 68F here in SW Houston. Perhaps my wall will keep the cold air away. Went to Walmart for some winter weather supplies (chocolate chip cookies and cream for my coffee). The store looked like a Cat 5 hurricane was heading for Houston. Holy cow! It's just a little freeze and maybe some ice on bridges north of I-59. It's not last February.

HRRR says you should be all snow as of about 5pm. See what I mean about vertical temperature profile being off in the models just slightly? You're right on the edge now, though.

Road closures are starting to appear across the DFW freeway system, especially the north and west sides.

Mesoscale Discussion 0113
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0711 PM CST Wed Feb 02 2022

Areas affected...portions of central into northern Texas...southeast
Oklahoma...western Arkansas

Concerning...Freezing rain

Valid 030111Z - 030515Z
SUMMARY...Freezing rain is ongoing across the region, and a few
instances of .10 inches/1 hour ice accretion rates are possible
going into the evening hours. The best chance for the heavier
freezing rain rates will be across northeast Texas into southwest
Arkansas.

DISCUSSION...Recent surface observations have noted accumulating
freezing rain across northern Texas over the past couple of hours.
Surface observations and 00Z mesoanalysis shows the surface freezing
line/web-bulb zero temperatures situated roughly from Crockett
County Texas, to areas just north of the DFW Metroplex, into the
Bryan-Le Flore County OK region. Surface-925 mb cold-air advection
is expected to gradually support the east-southeastward drift of
these near/below freezing surface temperatures with time, promoting
freezing rain (at least initially) across portions of southwest into
north-central TX, eastern OK, and western AR over the next 3-6 hours
(up to 06Z). MRMS mosaic radar imagery depicts up to 35-40 dBZ
values in close proximity to the surface freezing line in northern
Texas, which is overspread by above-freezing temperatures in the
925-700 mb layer per 00Z mesoanalysis. As such, occasionally heavier
freezing rain/ice accretion rates (perhaps up to 0.10 inch/1 hour)
may accompany heavier precipitation bands. However, deeper layers of
below-freezing temperatures are expected to usher into
central/northern TX and eastern OK through the evening, fostering a
more wintry mix (including sleet).

It’s 30 now and while not freezing on the roads, my trees are starting to sag already. The wind is strong enough to where it’s forming Eddys on the road like blowing snow or dust.

Hoping the column deepens soon. Particularly for the big cities like Dallas and Ft Worth.
