Wow, it is great seeing many people on here today. Feels like we are tracking an approaching tropical cyclone in the middle of hurricane season. This is great stuff!!

So this is what it's like to live in a snow prone area. Man, this is fun, winter weather is awesome. Too bad we never get too many of these. I'm watching the radar like it were a hurricane, wobble watching, haha!

Yes, sleet is moderate and starting to accumulate on colder surfaces here in West Hattiesburg. The temp is 27, the dewpoint is 22 and the humidity is 81%. In the past half hour I have seen some snow flurries mixed in with the sleet, so maybe the warm nose is starting to moderate and the sleet is going to begin to transition over to snow. Time will tell.

Temperature went down to 43 and then rose back to 44 just now...does anyone know what would hold the temperature up higher than forecast?

Here is todays discussion about the deep south event by Dr Jeff Masters.

A rare and dangerous ice storm has begun in the Deep South, where Winter Storm Leon is tracking along the northern Gulf Coast, spreading a nasty mix of freezing rain, sleet, cold rain, and snow along a swath from Central Texas to Eastern Virginia. At 8 am CST, freezing rain was falling at a temperature of 28°F in Austin, Texas, where a 20-car pileup on an overpass was reported, as well as at least ten other car crashes in a 30-minute time span. A portion of Interstate 35 was closed due to the crashes and icing. Freezing rain was falling on the north side of Houston, Texas, and in Mobile Alabama, this morning; snow was falling in Jackson Mississippi, and sleet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The National Weather Service has posted Freezing Rain Advisories along a swath from Eastern Texas across Southern Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, Southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, almost all of Georgia and South Carolina, and into Eastern North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Ice accumulations of 1/4" - 1/2" are expected in much of this area, with isolated higher amounts. Snows of 1 - 4" are possible just to the north of the freezing rain swath, with heavier amounts of 6 - 12" across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. The ice storm has the potential to cause significant damage to trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages. Travel will be very dangerous in a region unaccustomed to extreme winter weather.

Patience is the key my friend Temperatures will begin to drop off later this afternoon across the central Georgia region. You have to wait out the moistening of the dry air aloft and then the evaporative cooling will be in full effect by sunset tonight. IMO, after looking at the latest model runs, I think the I-16 corridor stands a very good chance of seeing minimum 2-4 inches of snow accumulations in spots as we get into tonight and early Wednesday morning before the precipitation moves out.

Intermittent light freezing rain and 30*F here. No noticeable icing as yet, but you can bet it's sticking, even if you can't see it.

...WINTER STORM UPDATE...
...WINTER STORM CREATING TREACHEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS ACROSS
SOUTHERN AND PARTS OF CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI...

AT 945 AM...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATED WIDESPREAD WINTRY
PRECIPITATION ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHERN HALF OF MISSISSIPPI. DUAL
POLARIZATION RADAR DATA AND REPORTS SHOWED THE MOST OF THIS
PRECIPITATION WAS SNOW ALONG AND NORTHWEST OF A LINE FROM HAMBURG...TO
MAGEE...TO QUITMAN. ALONG AND SOUTHEAST OF THIS LINE...THE PRECIPITATION
WAS A MIXTURE OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN...WITH SOME SNOW MIXED IN.

SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF A QUARTER TO THREE-QUARTERS OF AN INCH
OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED ALONG THE US
HIGHWAY 84 CORRIDOR IN MISSISSIPPI. IN NORTHEAST LOUISIANA AND WEST
CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI...IN AN AREA GENERALLY FROM HARRISONBURG TO PORT
GIBSON TO PUCKETT...1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW HAS FALLEN.

SNOW WILL BE GRADUALLY DIMINISHING FROM THE WEST OVER NORTHEAST
LOUISIANA AND WEST CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI THROUGH MIDDAY. FARTHER TO THE
SOUTH IN THE US HIGHWAYS 84 AND 98 CORRIDORS...PRECIPITATION WILL
CONTINUE INTO EARLY AFTERNOON BEFORE DIMINISHING FROM THE WEST
THROUGH MID AND LATE AFTERNOON. PRECIPITATION IN THIS AREA WILL ALSO
BE CHANGING TO SNOW FROM THE WEST...BUT THE LATEST INFORMATION
INDICATES A MIXTURE OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN COULD PERSIST IN THE
US HIGHWAY 98 AREA AND POINTS SOUTH INTO MID AFTERNOON. THIS COULD
RESULT IN SOME SPORADIC POWER ISSUES IN THIS AREA.

ROAD CONDITIONS ARE BEING REPORTED AS EXTREMELY POOR IN THE AREA
FROM INTERSTATE 20 SOUTH...AND TRAVEL IS DISCOURAGED. TEMPERATURES
ARE IN THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 20S IN THE AREA WHERE PRECIPITATION IS
FALLING...SO BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES ARE ICED OVER...EVEN ON WELL
TRAVELED HIGHWAYS AND INTERSTATES. LESS TRAVELED SECONDARY ROADS WILL
ALSO BECOME ICY IN PARTS OF SOUTH MISSISSIPPI WHERE HEAVIER
PRECIPITATION IS OCCURRING. IN THE JACKSON METRO AREA...BRIDGES AND
OVERPASSES ARE BEING REPORTED AS ICED OVER...ESPECIALLY IN HINDS AND
RANKIN COUNTIES.

CONTINUE TO MONITOR MEDIA SOURCES AND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
WEB...SOCIAL MEDIA...AND NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR UPDATES.

Northjax, do you think the field of moisture will slow down with its pace south?

Moisture is definitely starting to fill in now. On another note, does it seem like off to the west, it is taking a more west-east than southwest/northeast direction?

Well, the WV imagery depicts this very well. As it stands now, I think the northern extent of the precipiation shield has already gone as far north as it will get . The colder, very dry, denser air will filtrate the region beginning late today into tonight as the base of the deep upper level trough will move out of north Texas and swings eastward oe Deep South. Those of you along I-20 corridor, I-55 corridor in LA, I-59 in MS and I-65 corridor will see the ice and then snowfall accumulate into tonight.

Aftr midnight, I-85 in AL and GA, I-75 corridor and especially the I-16 corridor I think will see decent accumulaions. I=75 corridor will have ssues with ice south of Cordele, GA. Wednesday, the coastal regions of the Carolinas may get anywhere from 6-12 inches according to some of the reliable models. I-95 corridor in will be a mess with freezing rain and ice concerns from Savannah south the FL-GA state line and at 2-4 inches of snow across the low country of South Carolina. Areas at the coast looks to really get dumped on across the Carolinas as this region will be the potential bullseye , as the models have pretty much shown all during the days leadig into this vent.
