LUCK.

Last week's runs missed it poorly.

The wind is starting to pick up and the snow blowing up from the ground looks a lot worse than the stuff in the air...

DFW airport is completely closed...

I will say this much ... the front arrived very dramatically, as most know by now. Around 3:20 am here at the Portastorm Weather Center, we had wind gusts close to 50 mph, driving rain, and a temperature drop of 25 degrees within 45 minutes.

38 degrees now.

Stay safe you Metroplexers and enjoy your winter storm! :ggreen:

Squall line is here, win ds were up to 45 mph easily. Well here we go.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
548 AM CST TUE FEB 1 2011

...ARCTIC COLD FRONT ON ITS WAY...

...POSSIBLE WINTER WEATHER EVENT ON FRIDAY...

.DISCUSSION...
ARCTIC COLD FRONT IS WELL ON ITS WAY THROUGH SE TX THIS MORNING
WITH A LINE OF SEVERE STORMS PRODUCING WIND DAMAGE. THE LINE OF
STORMS ALONG WITH THE COLD FRONT SHOULD BE THROUGH SE TX THIS
MORNING. TEMPERATURES BEHIND THE FRONT ARD RAPIDLY DROPPING INTO
THE 30S. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME OF THE NORTHERN AREAS COULD SEE
SOME FROZEN PRECIP MIXED WITH POST FRONTAL RAIN FROM NORTH OF A
COLLEGE STATION TO CROCKETT LINE. THE MAIN CONCERN WILL BE THE
STRONG WINDS BEHIND THE FRONT AND ANY GUSTY WINDS PRODUCING WIND
DAMAGE WITH THE LINE OF STORMS.

TEMPERATURES WILL DROP IN THE 20S SO HAVE HARD FREEZE WARNING OUT
FOR THE AREA THROUGH WED MORNING. WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE GUSTY
AND WIND ADVISORY WAS EXTENDED INTO THE LATE EVENING HOURS AND
THROUGH THE NIGHT ALONG THE COAST. WINDS WILL ALSO COMBINE WITH
THE COLD AIR FOR WIND CHILL READINGS IN THE TEENS AND SINGLE
DIGITS. IT IS ALMOST TOO LATE TO PREPARE FOR THE COLD WEATHER IF
PREPARATIONS WERE NOT DONE YESTERDAY.

THERE IS A GROWING CONCERN FOR WINTER WEATHER ON BEGINNING
THRUSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY. THE COLD FIGID AIRMASS WILL ALREADY
BE IN PLACE WITH OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPS IN THE 20S FOR MOST INLAND
AREAS AND JUST BELOW FREEZING ALONG THE COAST. A STRONG UPPER
LEVEL LOW THAT IS CURRENTLY DROPPING SOUTH OUT OF THE ROCKIES
TOWARDS THE 4 CORNERS REGION TODAY AND TOMORROW WILL THEN SWING
EAST THU/FRI. STRONG QG LIFT AND LARGE SCALE ASCENT WILL
ACCOMPANY THE SYSTEM. MESOSCALE FORCING IS A BIT MORE DIFFICULT
TO NAIL DOWN BUT THINK THERE WILL BE AT LEAST SOME LOW LEVEL
FRONTOGENESIS AND ISENTROPIC LIFT AS A COASTAL LOW DEVELOPS. ALL
OF THE MODELS ARE HINTING AT SOME SORT OF PRECIP THU NIGHT INTO
FRI SO BUMPED POPS UP INTO THE LIKELY (60 POP) CATEGORY. THINK
THERE IS GOOD CONSENSUS OF PRECIP OCCURRING AND GIVEN
TEMPS/MOISTURE PROFILES...MOST AREAS WILL HAVE SNOW. THERE MAY BE
A NOSE OF WARM AIR AROUND 850MB ALONG THE COAST THAT COULD
SUPPORT SLEET/SNOW MIX. STILL SOME TIME TO NAIL DOWN DETAILS AND
ACCUMULATIONS. AT THIS TIME...IF MODELS ARE CORRECT IN PRECIP
AMOUNTS...SOME AREAS SOUTH OF I-10 COULD SEE 1-3 INCHES OF SNOW.
THE BEST TIME FOR FROZEN PRECIP WILL BE FROM 06 FRI TO 18Z FRI.
IT IS TOO FAR OUT FOR ANY KIND OF WINTER WEATHER WATCH BUT THAT
WILL BE THE NEXT STEP IN THE COMING DAYS IF FUTURE MODEL RUNS
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT WINTER PRECIP.

THE WEEKEND AND EARLY NEXT WEEK SHOULD WARM UP SOME. STILL WILL
UNDERCUT TEMP GUIDANCE FOR THE WEEKEND. GFS AND ECMWF DIFFER ON
TIMING OF NEXT FRONT. RIGHT NOW THE GFS HAS THE FRONT COMING MON
MORNING WITH THE ECMWF ABOUT 12-18 HOURS BEHIND THAT. STILL SOME
TIME TO WORK OUT THESE DIFFERENCES BUT YET AGAIN...THE AIRMASS
BEHIND THIS FRONT ON MON/TUE LOOKS TO BE CANADIAN/ARCTIC IN
NATURE. WOULD NOT BE SHOCKED TO SEE FREEZING TEMPS YET AGAIN.

About 3" here in Denison. :froze:

But radar sure is shutting down quickly. Thought it might be mostly over by noon or early afternoon, but didn't expect it to be over shortly after sunrise!

I think essentially Dallas will be shut down today. People are just starting to wake up and take in the aftermath.

Alright, time to log off and go outside and stand on the roof.

Txagwxman, I'm counting on you to come through for Austin and Tomball later this week. I'll take snow or sleet. No too picky. But I want some accumulations!

I have to confess that I'm a little surprised - maybe even a bit disappointed - that the storm is winding down so quickly.

Why? The model tease at times (and from a few of us) about apocalyptic accumulations - double digit stuff - here in portions of North Texas.

Unless some of the stuff still in Oklahoma and the Panhandle wraps around across the Red River, it looks like we'll end up with about 3" or so where I live.

Very memorable storm and frontal passage, but just a garden variety accumulation that we've seen plenty of times before.

Doggone it, I wanted HISTORY!!! :D  :cold: :froze:

Edit: Sorry Portastorm and the others down south. I guess when it comes to snow, I'm a bit greedy. Hence my S2K handle "Texas Snowman."

It's funny watching Mike and Mike on espn this morning form DT FW. Looks like they are in GB or Pitts lol.

Don't worry Texas Snowman! This is more than we can handle. The cold is going to be the real news story around here. Winter precip was never really modeled to be big in NTX (though 5-6 inches from Decatur to Graham areas isn't exactly small lol). We get to try this all over again a week from today.

Maybe it's just me, but the roads don't look that bad...yet. Will all of this sleet congeal together soon?

My thoughts is that all of the heat in the ground will try to melt this stuff. The cold will win out and make it more of an ice sheet. Perhaps I am wrong.

DART is closed... TRE is still working but with a 1hr+ delay
DFW will re-open later, the drastic drop in temperature quickly kept them from getting de-ice out in time.

Cars driving on the sleet will melt it but it will refreeze and get icier and slicker the more people drive over it on some roads with these temperatures. Dallas probably iced in for the most part until we can get some sunshine and temps in the upper 20s.
